The Lyttelton Times of the following week wrote: “One of the great objects of the Union will be attained by the Canterbury Scholars who have been so successful in the competition for the university scholarships being able to place their names on the roll of an affiliated institution without having to leave the Province.” LT 9 July 1872 This had implications for the three years that the Collegiate Union was in existence. Those who were awarded University of New Zealand Scholarships were both part of, and separate from, the Grammar School as it was originally planned (see Appendix 2, page 126).
Over these same years, Grammar School boys attended classes with their mothers and fathers and siblings. An early history of the University of Canterbury provides some examples. Hon. Henry and Mrs Georgiana Tancred, Mr and Mrs Worthy, Rev’d G Cotterill, and Archdeacon Willock attended classes in Botany and Zoology, while the Dean and Mrs Jacobs and Mrs Haast were members of the Modern Language Classes. 21 It was not necessary to sit the examinations, indeed the only public record of them appears in the Star . 22
