undergraduate degree, and by targeting superconducting qubits I have the option of pursuing both an academic and an industry career, while helping to develop bleeding-edge technology”. He finished his undergraduate degree (BSc in Physics and Mathematics) in 2018 and his BSc (Hons) in Physics in 2019 at the University of Auckland. Ross credits his years at College for supporting his academic skills and “instilling many qualities, such as courtesy and respect”. “In particular, I feel like this has
been a great help in professional environments, especially in interviews, and I use these skills every day,” he says. Ross also appreciates the “enormous amount of extra time that College HoD Chemistry Scott Franklin put in to help me prepare for the Olympiad” in Hanoi, Vietnam. During his time at College – as a boarder from 2010–2014 – Ross also won a University of Auckland academic scholarship, and achieved a NZQA Outstanding Scholarship in Chemistry
and Scholarship in Calculus, along with NCEA Level 3 with Excellence. Further, he was the runner-up to the Wacher Award for Academic Head of School. Among his school highlights, Ross recalls playing the drums for the Jesus Christ Superstar production and Big Band and finding time to gain his ATCL on saxophone. Today, he also endeavours to ‘give back’, inspired by his time at College to tutor students as “I love to help people learn”.
