handbags’. It was an excellent experience for all.” For Elliott, service – whaiaro āwhina tangata – “is a cornerstone of our approach to leadership and character at College”. “Service is all about stepping up to activities when no one is watching, even if it means that you go out of your comfort zone,” Elliott says. “Service, being a broad topic, can often mislead people into thinking that it is all about doing something that is thrust on you in the moment, but, really, it is a reflection of how willing you are to make someone’s life (or the life of a community) that little bit better than you have found it.” At College, there is a strong philosophy of service. “We are committed to leading to support others and recognising the many wonderful opportunities we have received in order to pay

it forward,” he says. “Honestly, we have to make a difference by stepping up and taking the initiative for change. “Change doesn’t happen in the passenger seat. You need to be the driver who everyone wants to learn from, and they say that all good things take time. Take Max Verstappen, for example. He took just more than a decade perfecting his driving skills from a young age before he won a F1 race when he was just 18, and took a lot

of losses along the way. “Service is no different. If

that means taking months to perfect a plan for an upcoming presentation, community service event, or a new service initiative like the sleep out on the Quad after multiple iterations and failed plans, so be it. You will enjoy it a lot more if you get involved than if you sit in the grandstands waiting for the race to start. That’s my guarantee.”
