Dr. Darryl Chamberlain Acting Chair, Department of Mathematics, Science and Technology

Dr. David Higgins Chair, Department of Humanities and Communication

Dr. Darryl Chamberlain serves as an assistant professor and acting department chair for the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Technology at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University — Worldwide. With a Ph.D. in Mathematics and Statistics, research background in educational qualitative and quantitative measurement and practical experience writing code in a variety of programming languages (Python, Javascript, C), Dr. Chamberlain serves as an expert in Educational Data Science. His research focuses on applying machine learning algorithms and other predictive models to analyze, anticipate and describe student thinking. He is commonly called on for his experience surrounding technology in education, serving as chair of the Mathematics Association of America Subcommittee on Technology in Mathematics Education as well as chair of the Embry-Riddle Worldwide Faculty Senate Academic Technology Committee.

Dr. David M. Higgins is an associate professor of English and chair of the Department of Humanities and Communication at Embry-Riddle Worldwide. He is also a senior editor for the Los Angeles Review of Books, a public literary arts magazine with over four million monthly readers. Dr. Higgins is the author of Reverse Colonization: Science Fiction, Imperial Fantasy, and Alt-Victimhood, which won the 2021 Science Fiction Research Association Book Award. He has also published a critical monograph examining Ann Leckie’s science fiction masterwork Ancillary Justice, and his research has been published in journals such as American Literature, Science Fiction Studies, Paradoxa and Extrapolation as well as in edited volumes such as The Cambridge History of Science Fiction and The Cambridge Companion to American Science Fiction. Dr. Higgins is also a fellow with the University of Minnesota’s Center for Climate Literacy, and he serves as an editor for Climate Lit, an open-access compendium of environmental literacy resources for educators. In the public sphere, Dr. Higgins has been a featured speaker on NPR’s radio show On Point, and his literary journalism has been published in the Los Angeles Review of Books and The Guardian.

J.R. Hanamean Acting Chair, Department of Behavorial and Social Sciences

J.R. Hanamean is a full-time faculty member, the acting chair of Behavioral and Social Sciences, and the director of the Center of Mentorship Programs and Student Success (COMPASS). He has been with Embry-Riddle Worldwide since 2005. Mr. Hanamean has served as an adjunct faculty member and director of academics at Worldwide’s Seymour Johnson Campus. He was the Associate Discipline Chair, Physical & Life Sciences, before assuming his current role. He served 26 years in the U.S. Air Force in various command, staff and operational positions. Mr. Hanamean’s research interests include vegetation greenness impacts on maximum and minimum temperatures in Northeast Colorado. He also is interested in ways to incorporate technology into the classroom to improve the learning and teaching experience and student mentorship.
