ANTI-AGING DENTISTRY NEWS THE ANTI-AGING ISSUE JULY/AUGUST 2024 PRESERVE YOUTH VIA SOUND ANTI-AGING PRACTICES

As a pioneer in the field of anti-aging dentistry, I have been fascinated by the broader processes of aging throughout the body.

endorphins. Even a regimen as simple as walking 1,000 steps a day can help. Also, deep breathing as you are walking helps draw more oxygen into the lungs, into the organs, and into the brain. You will invariably feel more alert as you draw more oxygen into your body.

Many people strive to hang onto their youth by going on a diet. But just as aging affects the entire body, anti-aging strategies must encompass all aspects of our health. To slow the processes of aging, you must embrace an anti-aging lifestyle. This must begin with a holistic understanding of the many ways our bodies change as we age.

Other hormones have the opposite effect. When the autonomic nervous system reacts to danger, the

body secretes adrenaline and cortisol. These stress hormones kick-start the aging process by breaking down the body from the inside. Stress and anxiety also cause shallow breathing. You can combat this through deep breathing to calm the autonomic nervous system. Another way to reduce anxiety is by taking cold showers. A cold shower completely resets the autonomic nervous system. For thousands of years, we evolved while living in cold temperatures. Re-creating those conditions may help us burn fat and improve our mood.

Maintaining metabolism. As we age, our metabolic rate tends to decrease. You’re not burning as many calories as you did when you were younger, and you gain weight. Older adults also tend to decrease their activity and spend more time sitting. As your weight and body fat increase, you enter a state that is a precursor to diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease.

Weight gain also brings hormonal changes that can dampen your mental health. The more weight you gain, the less happy you feel and the less motivated you are to exercise. The way to prevent this is to exercise to increase your metabolic rate, eat a proper diet, and control your sugar and carb intake. It’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle! Also, free radicals, which originate via normal cell metabolism or from outside sources such as pollution, can accumulate in the body and create oxidative stress, increasing your risk of diseases including cancer and heart disease. Consuming antioxidants such as blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries can reduce free radicals and lessen this aging effect. Also, we need to avoid putting oxidants into our bodies. The chemical people use as a whitening agent, hydrogen peroxide, is an oxidant and can lead to free radical reactions and oxidation damage in the body. Improving mood. Happiness is a product of the internal pharmacy of the body. It is sparked by the secretion of endorphins, hormones that make you feel better. Exercise is an important way to generate

Curbing inflammation. Inflammation is a precursor to disease. In the mouth, inflammation in the form of gingivitis is a predictor of gum disease. We know how to reverse gingivitis through proper cleaning and flossing, so why should we ever experience gum disease? The same principle is true for the whole body. We know that the No. 1 cause of inflammation is sugar. Sugar intake causes decay in the mouth, and as it enters the body, it causes inflammation within the body. Diet is the No. 1 way to get rid of harmful inflammation. A major reason for weight gain and obesity is the increase in our intake of processed sugar, which has found its way into almost everything we eat. Monitoring your intake of sugar, especially processed sugar, is an important part of an anti-aging lifestyle. As you can see, an anti-aging lifestyle encompasses many facets of your life. It’s more than a diet — it’s a lifestyle! Wishing you a more vibrant, energetic future!

GRILL AND CHILL Host a Summer Barbecue for Everyone

in wet swimsuits can sit wherever they want without stressing out their host,” says Calla Quinn, a TikTok influencer who recently posted tips on hosting up to 50 friends at your home. Another tip she shares is using portable misting fans in dry climates. These devices create a fine mist to refresh passersby in seconds, and they are especially popular on patios and decks. If attendees offer to bring something, don’t hesitate to accept, and be specific about what you want — from lawn chairs to beach towels. Martha Stewart recommends having a stain remover on hand to manage stains and cloth towels that guests can use to wipe up spills. Expert hosts also recommend a self-serve station. Consider filling several 3-gallon drink dispensers with popular options. Depending on your guest list, you might offer family fare such as lemonade, iced tea and ice water. Martha Stewart suggests

allowing amateur mixologists to concoct their own beverages by setting out bottled juices, sodas, and kombucha. A stylish yet simple way to serve hors d’oeuvres and side dishes to complement your grilled entree is to assemble or have catered a charcuterie board. These feature finger foods such as meats, cheeses, olives, spreads, fruits, nuts, chips, and crackers. A fully stocked charcuterie board adds a decorative touch while keeping guests well-fed for hours, adding what Quinn calls “a real wow factor.” And to make sure your day ends well, look for disposable, compostable bamboo or wooden dishes. Searching for “eco-friendly tableware and cutlery” should turn up some good options. This one last detail can go a long way toward supporting sustainable living while ensuring you don’t spend any valuable party time cleaning up broken glass or washing dishes.

Enjoying your own party can be more complicated than it sounds. Backyard barbecues are a high point of summer, but hosting one you enjoy with your guests requires planning. “If swimming is on the agenda, consider protecting new or light-colored indoor furniture with water-resistant covers so guests

As I have followed new developments in anti-aging research in recent years, I have come to a conclusion that many people are astonished to hear. In fact, it blows people’s minds. AI REVOLUTION Does Living Longer Mean Living Better?

understand how biological systems age and how disease progresses. Current areas of study include the effects of inflammation, cell deterioration, and oxidative stress. As mentioned in my Page 1 article, oxidative stress and inflammation are conditions individuals can guard against by embracing an anti-aging lifestyle. Scientists are exploring possible life-extending therapies, such as the potential for cellular reprogramming, which entails reversing the development of mature cells and turning

them into immature stem cells. Another area of study is caloric restriction, which has been shown to have anti-aging effects in mice. Venki Ramakrishnan, a Nobel Prize-winning molecular biologist and author of “Why We Die: The New Science of Aging and the Quest for Immortality,” articulated the challenge clearly in a recent address at Harvard University: “The question is whether we can tackle aging processes while still keeping us who we are as humans — and whether we can do that in a safe and effective way.”

I believe that within the next five years, with the help of artificial intelligence (AI), humans will have attained the capacity to live to the age of 120. And I believe babies born today have a good chance of living 200 years.

Many people don’t believe me when I say this. But we are learning so much, so fast, about slowing the forces of aging that I foresee a fundamental shift. If we reach a point when we are able to live for a long, long time, then delaying death is no longer the most pressing issue. Our quality of life must become the central concern. As I discuss in our Page 1 article in this issue, we must embrace an anti-aging lifestyle. Researchers have spent billions of dollars trying to figure out how to slow or stop aging, and AI is driving more rapid advancements, speeding the development of models to analyze vast databases to

Patients usually expect dental exams to begin with a request to lean back in the chair and “open up.” As a specialist in anti-aging dentistry, I take a different approach. Anti-aging dentistry is based on more than simply caring for the teeth. By analyzing the signs of aging on a person’s face, I look for ways to build smiles that are straighter, whiter, and structurally sound. The process can transform the entire lower one-third of the face. I start by examining the upper and lower lips and any hollow areas of the face. Then, I ask the patient to smile so I can study the teeth: Are they positioned correctly to support the lips and cheeks? Are they the correct length to create a firm framework for the face? In exploring why the smiles of some celebrities, such as Julia Roberts, are so appealing, I realized that the width of the smile is a major factor. A healthy smile will expose at least 10 top teeth. As people age, fewer teeth are visible when they smile, and black spaces open up between the teeth. Also, downward lines at the corners of the lips suggest that the teeth have lost length, causing the How Anti-Aging Dentistry Can Rejuvenate Your Smile Turn Back Time

A thin upper lip suggests the upper teeth have receded inward, allowing the lip to cave in. Similarly, if the lower lip is extending outward, the lower teeth are jutting too far out, and if the lower lip is too thin, the lower teeth have receded. To reverse these effects, I use porcelain veneers and crowns to build out and add extra length to the teeth, open up the bite, widen the arch, and eliminate black holes. These changes can take 10–20 years off a person’s appearance. I conceived this approach more than a decade ago when working with plastic surgeons and other specialists on television “makeover” shows. I realized that skillful anti-aging dentistry could reduce or even eliminate patients’ desire for Botox injections and facelifts.
