By Harry and Hadassah Wilkinson August 2024 Last evening Harry called Brother and Sister Wilson to let them know we are getting close and asked if they would allow us to pitch our tent in their yard. This is a couple we got to know when we were in Alamogordo while traveling with our truck. They said they would be glad to have us and were looking forward to seeing us again. Today was hills, hills and more hills. We are camped behind a rail- road track and a small hill on an unused side road. The sun is nearly down and we are going to bed. Harry has collapsed and we are both shivering from the chill in the air. Harry says there has not been a day since we left that pulling the cart was as hard as it was today. The hills we had to climb along with the thin air at this elevation has him weak, shaky, and completely exhausted. (Isaiah 40:28-29). One half mile down the road the next morning, a truck pulled over and asked if we wanted a ride to Corolla. You bet we did! The family of father, mother and a young daughter were on their way to Corolla to buy firewood. Hadassah rode up front and Harry and Shiloh rode in back with the cart. Before we reached Corolla, we came upon an old peddler’s wagon drawn by a team of three donkeys and a small horse. Four more don- keys were in lead at the back of the
wagon. The driver had pulled off at a wide spot to let traffic by. The gentleman driving the truck we

instead of the two that Harry thought we would get, but who’s counting? We were about 90 miles from Tularosa when Brother and Sister Wilson picked us up. Praise God! We spent a relaxing day visiting with the Wilsons. Sister Wilson pre- pared wonderful pancakes from scratch and we ate at their outdoor table, enjoying the warm sunshine and warm temperature here in the Tularosa Basin, surrounded by the beautiful mountains in the dis- tance. What a gorgeous place. (Psalm 19:1). We took showers and did laundry. This evening we all went to church in Alamogordo. It felt odd to be in Alamogordo, where the walk will end. We still have a day of walking ahead of us as we plan to walk the last 14 miles from Tu- larosa to Alamogordo. Guess it’s the principle of the thing. We want to walk into Alamogordo. It just wouldn’t be right otherwise and we sure don’t want to mess up at this point.
were in remembered seeing this same wagon in another area and said he had talked with the owner. He wanted to say, “Hello” and see if the peddler had anything to trade so he pulled over and got out to talk. We were thrilled at the opportu- nity to get a closer look at this rig and meet the driver. He was friendly and his appearance fit the wagon he drove. He was large of build and had a full, white beard. We spent a few minutes with him and then went our way. We left Corolla and headed into more hills. After a couple of hours of walking, mostly up hill, a road- side table was a welcome sight and afforded a needed rest. (Philippians 4:19).
when a pickup truck, coming to- ward us, pulled over on the shoul- der and stopped. Hadassah dropped back a ways, as is our practice in situations like this. As Harry neared the truck he called back, “It’s Brother and Sister Wil- son!” Excitement gave renewed en- ergy to Hadassah’s tired legs and she ran toward the truck with Shiloh keeping pace beside her. Amidst hugs, praising the Lord, and excited talk, the Wilsons ex- plained that they figured out about where we should be, borrowed a truck, and came looking for us to take us on to Tularosa. They of- fered us a bedroom in their home but we opted to stay in their stor- age barn, which is insulated and has electricity. We are very comfort- able. Shiloh needs to be near us and the Wilson’s cats don’t need to be near Shiloh.
Almost a heartache — within a mile of Alamogordo!
