heritage, the resort featured giant black and white photos from the depression era as well as two classic automobiles. Imagine my surprise when I discovered one of the vehicles was a 1928 Ford Coupe, complete with rumble-seat. “Wow!” I exclaimed. “Could this be the same Ford Coupe, the same rumble-seat God chose as my place of conception?” With all the abortion controversy today, I wonder if my parents had thought of aborting me? The circumstances contributing to my conception certainly warranted those thoughts and considerations. Thankfully, God’s will won out and both He and my parents wel- comed me into this world. Although God rejoices with each new birth, His heart surely aches when He hears the heated protests of women who believe they have sole propriety over the child growing in their womb. “It’s my body!” they exclaim. “It’s my choice!” Unfortunately, these would-be mothers fail to realize their body and the child growing in their womb were both de- signed by a Master Creator. “Let us make man in our own image…so God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” (Genesis 1:26-27). For many couples the news of a pregnancy is a time of rejoicing, a threefold miracle initiated by God in union with a man and woman. But even an unplanned, unwanted pregnancy can be a source of great joy. On April 26, 1992, a California couple, confronted with an unplanned pregnancy faced a difficult decision: abort their baby or put him up for adoption. They chose adoption. Raised in a Christian home by his adopted parents, Aaron Judge would eventually pursue his God given baseball talents to become a rising star for the New York Yankees. On October 4, 2022, the 6’7”, 282 pound gifted athlete made baseball his- tory by hitting his 62nd home run, breaking the previous single season record of 61 home runs hit by former Yankee, Roger Maris. During our current 2024 Major League Baseball Season, Aaron Judge continues to crush home runs at a record pace. Given the gift of life by his birth parents, Aaron Judge is achieving the stardom God had always planned for him. Nearly 9 decades ago in the rumble-seat of a vintage Ford Coupe God used a moment of heated passion between my unwed parents to fulfill a promise He makes to all His offspring: “Before you were in your mother’s womb I knew you, before you were born I anointed you.” During the difficult Depression Era, despite extremely arduous cir- cumstances, my parents welcomed me into this world. They chose birth over abortion, life over death, joy over sadness and regret. No, I never achieved the stardom of Aaron Judge or other gifted athletes. But look- ing back at the many glorious ways God has anointed this unworthy servant of His, I believe I’m not the only one who applauds the decision made by my parents. Thanks, Mom and Dad! Instead of choosing other options you ac- cepted me, you loved me, and you fulfilled those words God speaks to all His offspring: “Be fruitful and multiply!” (Genesis 1:28). Thank you for allowing me to be a part of God’s greatest achievement — the cre- ation of human life. —————
Ever since the Supreme Court reversed its position on Roe vs Wade, the debate over the sanctity of human life has intensified. In fact, the outcome of our upcoming 2024 presidential election could well be determined on the issue of abortion. While both pro- choice and pro-life advocates are extremely vocal in stating their positions, it puzzles me why the most important voice in this de- bate is given little or no voice at all. As Creator of the universe and everything in it, doesn’t God deserve a say in matters pertaining to His greatest achievement, the creation of human life? Ab- solutely He does! So where do we go to find God’s view on abort- ing the lives He creates? We go to the Scriptures and read God’s very own Words. In Genesis 1:1-25, we read how God created the heavens and the earth. He then turned to the creation of His most cherished possession, human life. God said, “Let us make man in Our own image…so God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created them, male and female He created them. And God blessed them and said to them. ‘Be fruitful and multiply!” (Genesis 1:26-28). The Bible is clear, every life is precious to God. In Jeremiah 1:5, He explained to a young prophet his importance to the Creator: “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born I anointed you.” In Jeremiah 29:11, God gives further evidence of man’s importance to Him: “I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord. “Plans for good and not for evil; plans to give you hope and a future.” King David recognized God’s creative genius when he wrote in Psalm
139:13-16: “You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will praise You for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest part of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet formed. And in Your book they were all written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.” Throughout Scripture we read of God’s great love for His people, em- phasized with this promise, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (He- brews 13:5). Young or old, able or disabled, rich or poor, black or white, we are all His beloved children. From the moment of conception to our last earthly breath, we belong to our Creator. Yes, God’s Word reveals much about His plan for the lives He creates. It’s unfortunate so few of His people take time to read from God’s play- book for their life. If they did, they would understand how each of us — our children, their children and their children’s children — are all part of
God’s plan for this earthly journey. In fact, God loves us so much He sent His own Son to die on the cross for us and provide a pathway to eternal happiness with Him in Heaven (John 3:16). What’s lost in the rhetoric from those advocating abortion is how their actions have thwarted God’s plan to populate the earth He created. Medical people, health care workers, pilots, scientists, dentists, mis- sionaries, clergy, teachers, athletes, truck drivers, bus drivers, janitors and yes, even politicians, are all part of God’s plan to keep the wheels of commerce running smoothly. No matter how a child is conceived, intentionally or unintentionally, God is waiting to welcome that child with a unique plan and purpose for his or her life. Years ago, my mother told me I was an unexpected preg- nancy conceived in the rumble-seat of an early vintage Ford Coupe. My mother was 18, my father 19 when they married. Two months later I arrived, a fully devel- oped 8 pound baby boy defying the customary 9 month gestation period. No doubt many eyebrows were raised at the news of my birth. One of my life’s greatest joys has been watching my own family prosper and grow. In the fall of 2022, I had the privilege of performing the marriage ceremony for my grandson Alex and his bride, Bryanna. The wed- ding took place at the historic Four Seasons Resort in Pembine, Wisconsin. Adding to the charm of it’s 1925
