Greek construction äs found in John 17:12. The form o f expression in the Greek trans lated “but” does not imply, according to the usage o f the New Testament* that this one was one o f those mentioned before as having been given to the Lord. Now as to the meaning of 1 Cor. 9:27. In the first place it should be said that Paul does not express a fear here that he should be a “castaway.” He does say that if he did not “buffet his body and bring it into bondage” (R. V .), he might become a cast away, but he expressly says that he did buffet his body and he did bring it into bondage. He does not express any fear that he should not buffet it and bring it into bondage, he simply tells what would be the result if he did not, but he says that he did. But someone will ask, “suppose he had not.” The answer is, “ But he did,” he says he did, not that he might n ot You can prove anything by supposing something contrary to the fact. Furthermore, the 1 word “castaway” does not necessarily mean lost. Its exact force is "disapproved.” In this, passage there is not the slightest expression o f fear on Paul’s part that he would be lost, there is simply a statement o f what he did in order that he might not- become “ disapproved” and set aside. I Believing that the eternal person men tioned in Hebrews 7 was Jesus Hiniself, how .would you explain that He was with out an earthly mother? Did He not have an earthly mother in the person of Mary ? The interpretation concerning Melchizer dek mentioned in Hebrews 7 referred W -by the questioner, is not that Melchizedek was Jesuä Himself, but that he was the person who became incarnate in Jesus. Jesus did not exist as Jesus until He was born o f the Virgin M ary.' Mary was not the mother o f the Eternal Word o f God, but the Eternal W ord of God became incar nate through Mary in the person o f Jesus o f Nazareth.

Please explain what Paul meant in i Cor. 9:27. Did Paul consider it possible that he could be dost, and if so, how can we harmonize this teaching with such passages as 2 Tim. 1:12? ■ There is no reason for inferring-from 1 Cor. 9:27 or from anything that Paul ever wrote that he considered it possible that he could be ultimately lost. W e do not know how we could harmonize such a thought with: the clear teaching o f 2 Tim. 1:12, nor how we could harmonize it with a good deal beside that is in the W ord o f God. Our Lrd Himself taught us that He gave to His sheep eternal life and that they should never perish, and that no one should snatch them out o f His hand, and added, furthermore, that His sheep were not only in His hand but'in the hand. o f the Father, aind that no one would be able to snatch them out o f the Father’s hand (John 10:28, :29,;R. V .). Furthermore, our Lord taught that o f those whom the Father had given to. Him “not one o f them” should “perish” (John 17:12). Some infer from this verse that ope perished, “thg spa of perdition;” that he was one o f those who had been given by the Father to the Lord Jesus. But that is not the force o f the
