THE KING’S BUSINESS
o f the whole Bible (cf. John 5 :39; 45-47; Acts 3:24; 10:43); That Jesus is the sub- ject'of the whole Bible in all its parts, that there is thig marvellous unity o f thought running through it from start to finish, and all centering in the one Person, is an over whelming proof o f the inspiration o f the entire book. Saturday, March 25 . Luke 24 : 28 - 35 . At last in Jesus’ manner bi breaking bread and blessing it their eyes were opened and they knew Him. There is something deeply significant in the fact that they knew Him in the breaking of the bread. There was something so real in the man ner o f His approach to God in connection with the most commonplace affairs o f daily life, so; different from , the way in which other men approach God in the blessing at their meals, that instantly when He lifted His eyes to God and began to speak they knew that it was Jesus and Jesus only. But no sooner did they recognize Him than He vanished out o f their sight. Then it all Came back to them how their hearts had been strangely warmed as He spoke to them and as He opened to them the Scrip tures. How different pur study o f the Scripture is some days from what it is other days. When Jesus Himself comes .and opens to us the Scriptures what a singular warmth, what a glowing gladness comes into our hearts. Here is the secret o f all real profitable Bible study, to look to* the Lord Jesus and to have the Lord Jesus, come and open the Scriptures to us as we study them. As soon as the glad truth had burst upon them that Jesus really had risen and that they really had seen Him, without a moment’s delay they hur ried back seven and one-half miles to Jerusalem to tell the rest. Ah, when one comes to really know Jesus as the Risen Christ he cannot keep it to himself, he must tell others. It was late and the way was long, but they could not wait. A heart full o f the truth o f the Risen Christ*never can wait. When they reached the Apos tolic company they found the eleven had already heard from Simon that the Lord
Scriptures and built up a lasting faith b y - founding it upon the W ord o f God and not merely upon experienfce, Faith cometh by hearing, not—by seeing (Rom. 10:17). He first of all charges them with folly. Their folly consisted (in being “ slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken .” , Any one whew does not believe all that the prophets have spoken is a fool, according to the Lord Jesus, and there are many fools cut after that pattern today. Let it sink down deeply into our hearts that Jesus says any one who doubts anything the prophetsJiave spoken is fool ish. He said too that" the trouble was not 'with their heads but with their hearts. This is usually the seat o f the difficulty with skeptics (John 7 :17; 5:44; 8:47; Psa. 14:1). True wisdom according to our Lord Jesus consists in believing “ in all the prophets have spoken.” ' He went on to show them that it was no mischance that the Christ had suffered these things, that it was abso lutely necessary, and by that path, and that path alone could He enter into glory (cf. 1 Peter 1:11, R. V .; John 12:24). The path to glory for us is just the same. Only through suffering can we enter into glory (John 12:26; Acts 14:22; 2 Tim. 2:12; Rom. 8:17). Then Jesus proceeded to open the Scriptures. What a wonderful exper ience it must have been to have had the Author of the Bible expound it to them. But it is our .privilege to have the same experience daily, for each o f us may have the Holy Spirit to interpret the Scriptures to us every time we read them. Jesus began at the beginning and H e took up “all” the Scripture. There is in verse 27 an inex haustible suggestiveness as to how to study the Bible. W e should study it believingly. W e should begin at the beginning 'and study it consecutively. W e should study it com prehensively, taking it not in part, but all the Scriptures. W e should -study it under the guidance o f the Lord Himself, and in all that we study w e should seek to see the things ' concerning Himself. Beginning at the beginning with the Pentateuch, and then going through the prophets He showed them that He Himself was the one theme
