Money in your HSA can be used only to cover qualified health care expenses for you and your dependents as allowed under federal tax law. In addition, your HSA may be used to cover COBRA continuation premiums, qualified long-term care insurance premiums, health plan premiums when you are receiving unemployment compensation, or Medicare or retiree health plan premiums (excluding Medicare Supplement or Medigap premiums) once you reach age 65. If you use your HSA funds for expenses that are not allowed under federal tax law, the withdrawal will be subject to tax, and you will incur a 20 percent tax penalty.
