SATURDAY NIGHT 7:00 pm ADORNI CENTER KINGS OF WESTERN SWING CARL SONNY LEYLAND
BLUES, BOOGIE WOOGIE, JAZZ, WESTERN SWING
Carl Sonny Leyland was born and raised on the South Coast of England, growing up close to the city of Southampton. As a child he was drawn to the American music he heard on LP records his father would play. It was here that he developed an appreciation for Dixieland jazz, 1950s rock & roll, and the country music of Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams. At age 15 Leyland discovered boogie woogie. Captivated by the sound of the repeating 8 to the bar left hand pattern, Leyland was inspired to go to the piano and begin on a path that would become his life's purpose. Within three months he would be performing in public & shortly after would become a member of a respected local group, The Bob Pearce Blues Band. Initially influenced by boogie woogie greats Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson & Meade 'Lux' Lewis, Leyland went on to explore the piano blues genre, becoming an authority on early and obscure styles such as those played by Cow Cow Davenport, Little Brother Montgomery, Montana Taylor and Speckled Red, among many others. In 1988 Leyland traveled to the USA and his first visit to New Orleans inspired him to relocate there, where he spent the next 9 years. He was active on the club scene, quickly gaining a reputation for his authentic blues & THURSDAY 8:00 pm ADORNI CENTER w/Dave Stuckey & the Hot House Gang 9:15 pm ADORNI CENTER Carl Sonny Leyland & the Boogie Woogie Boys FRIDAY 2:30 pm EAGLE HOUSE w/Dave Stuckey & the Hoot Owls 5:30 pm EUREKA THEATER w/Oscar Wilson & Joel Paterson 7:00 pm ADORNI CENTER Kings of Western Swing 10:00 pm SEQUOIA CENTER w/Dave Stuckey & the Hot House Gang
early rock & roll stylings. He also toured with Anson Funderburgh & the Rockets, whose line up included blues great Sam Myers. In '97 Leyland moved to Southern California where he joined the well-known rockabilly and western swing group, Big Sandy & His Flyrite Boys. He toured with them for over three years, during which time his repertoire grew to include ragtime & early jazz styles that enabled him to become part of the traditional jazz scene around L.A. and San Diego. Still active in the blues world, Sonny appears on occasion with such notables as Jontavious Willis, Kim Wilson and Rod Piazza. This year he is a featured artist on the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise. He's still involved with the rockabilly scene and plays each year in the backing band at Viva Las Vegas, and more recently at the Summer Jamboree in Senegalia, Italy. Whether playing solo or with his trio, Leyland's playing displays an infectious spontaneity, providing plenty of surprises for the listener. While he possesses the necessary vocabulary to pay tribute to the greats of old, he prefers to let each performance be an opportunity to say something new. www.carlsonnyleyland.com SPONSORED BY JACK & BARB MC COWN SATURDAY 1:00 pm ADORNI CENTER w/Duke Robillard & Joel Paterson 2:30 pm EAGLE HOUSE w/Dave Stuckey & the Hoot Owls 7:00 pm VETERANS MEMORIAL Carl Sonny Leyland & the Boogie Woogie Boys with Mando Dorame SUNDAY 12:00 pm VETERANS MEMORIAL w/ Dave Stuckey & the Hoot Owls 3:00 pm ADORNI CENTER with Duke Robillard - Tribute to Big Joe Turner and Jimmy Witherspoon 7:30 pm EAGLE HOUSE w/Dave Stuckey & the Hot House Gang
