Homelessness action needed Homelessness Week in August is an important time to raise awareness for the more than 122,000 Australians who are without a home on any given night. The theme for 2024 was ‘Homelessness Action Now’.
AnglicareSA and Believe Housing Australia work with the Adelaide North West Homelessness Alliance (ANWHA) to support South Australians in need, and raise awareness of the impact of homelessness and the solutions needed to end homelessness, because everyone has the right to a safe, secure place to call home.
ANWHA is a collaboration between Aboriginal Sobriety Group, AnglicareSA, Centacare Catholic Family Services, Department of Human Services, St John’s Youth Services, The Salvation Army South Australia, Uniting Communities, and Uniting SA.
Turning Point AnglicareSA’s homelessness service supports children, young people, and families to thrive. The safety and wellbeing of children, young people, and families are at the centre of what we do. The Turning Point program is part of our homelessness service and combines our case management capability and experience with Believe Housing Australia’s social housing portfolio to offer housing to women with children who are homeless due to escaping domestic and family violence. The program has dedicated, fully furnished homes, enabling women and children to quickly move in and focus on their needs. We support women to gain financial security, maintain connections with health and other services, and keep children connected to their school friends and community (if safe to do so). When homelessness and housing instability occur, individuals, families, and communities can become trapped in cycles of disadvantage that can span generations.
Turning Point supports women and children to find their ‘forever home’, live successfully in the community, and break down cycles of disadvantage. This will benefit not only the current generation experiencing homelessness and housing instability, but also future generations. Families who have come through the Turning Point program have gone on to secure permanent housing. One family purchased their own home. Over the past year, the Turning Point program has assisted 11 families with a total of 27 children. Turning Point has proven effective in providing a safe option for women and children escaping violence and helping them to regain their independence. AnglicareSA will build on this success and, with the support of donors and foundations, is working towards significantly increasing the number of homes available to the program.
