OUR CUP runneth over

mature cowherd and red dispersal Elite Simmental and SimAngus™ Genetics

STARBUCK, MINNESOTA NOVEMBER 30, 2024 1:00 pm (ct)

Home of Bred for Balance

Welcome to the first ever all female sale here at Clear Springs! We are truly honored that you have shown interest in our program and look forward to dispersing this wonderful set of cows to likeminded breeders and cattlemen across the country. It was no easy decision to open our doors and offer these proven females right off the top of our herd, but after deciding that it was time to sell the reds and let other tremendous breeders carry on that torch, we wanted to make an event around it. In addition to OUR CUP runneth over

Jim Wulf Family

selling every red female on the ranch (except one lump jaw cow that we put an embryo in) we are also selling every mature cow from the AI herd. Last spring I had the pleasure of sorting through the cowherd to decide who is worthy of AI and who needs to become a recip, and as many of you know, culling is maybe one of the most satisfying tasks of a cattleman. Not because of the cows that you let go or in this case, make recips out of, the true joy in culling is seeing the results of what you are left with in a particular group, and I am here to tell you, the group of AI cows we were left with was such a joy to drive through and breed on! The hoof and udder quality, maternal ability and genetic improvement these females offer is second to none. We have built this herd around breeding principles that have stood the test of time with the main philosophy being “Bred for Balance”. To me, Bred for Balance is not taking any one thing to an extreme but diligently moving every trait forward, whether it be a quantifiable trait represented as an EPD or a phenotypic trait selected through diligent genetic selection and culling. We also understand that the beef industry requires a multitude of different types of cattle, based on everyone’s operational goals and scenarios. The process of creating maternal and terminal lines is already becoming more and more evident not only within our breeding program but also in the industry. My goal moving forward is to take that concept to the next level by producing cattle that fit into those boxes even more distinctly. For someone that buys his replacement females and ships his whole calf crop to the feedyard, a bull that maximizes growth and carcass traits through breed leading TI is paramount. For others who focus on raising and selling quality replacements, STAYABILITY and overall genetic balance are key. With today’s genomic technologies provide thought the American Simmental Association, Allied Genetic Resources and Top Genomics, there has never been a more exciting time to be in the seedstock business with opportunities all around us to improve the efficiency and profitability of raising BEEF, the best protein source in the world. Often, the word “Dispersal” is equated to going out of business so I would like to take this opportunity to reassure you this is not the case. Our annual Bred for Balance sale is planned once again for the second Friday in February, which lands on the 14th in 2025. We look forward to working with you to make genetic selections that are right for your operation in the coming months and for years to come.

MATURE COWHERD AND RED dispersal • When it came time to choose who to lead off this book with, 978 was an easy choice! All along I have said one reason to have this sale now is so we can offer to the public these full sisters to Guardian in the prime of their life. Goodwill has done her job here at Clear Springs being the dam of last year’s lot 1 bull who sold to Schooley Cattle in IA as a premier purebred heifer bull. The mating of 231A on 978 has worked very well producing our up-and-coming donor Kordova 248K as a natural calf with many more full sibs to come after flushing her that way again. Her elite genomic values combined with her productive structure, awesome hoof, and tight udder make 978 one of the most elite Purebred females in the Simmental breed, ready to take your program to a new level. • Ever since these first two females were calves, I have gone back and forth on which one is better. That question is still not answered! Both have done an outstanding job for us with 967 passing on a little more punch and power. Her flush to Essential worked well producing a son who went to work for Chris Logan and Steve Williams in Alabama. She has both a Black Hawk and an Eagle daughter back in the herd and her 2023 bull was a sale highlight by Original. Grandious has all the pieces to be a bull raising machine, topped off by her 115 average weaning weight ratio on her first 4 calves! Est. • There are many highlights to this truly special female sale, one of those being it may be the largest offering of mature Beacon daughters ever! If you haven’t heard, the Beacon cows do a tremendous job, and Gypsum fits that mold well. Her first calf, 112, is a Firesteel daughter that raised a whale of a Kodiak bull this year. Then came a couple really attractive Affirmed sons, one went to Jake Bryce and the other unfortunately was injured. Her Haggard daughter from this year is a true stand out in the replacement heifers. 981 is real easy fleshing, maintains a BCS of 6 or 7 through out the year while still boosting an average WW ratio of 107 on 4 calves.

• 902 is great at producing bulls for Nebraska and Colorado, lol. Her first son by Rainfall went to Craig Uden, next was a Homeland to John Raftopoulos, then an Original to Tyler Pieper. This year she finally gave us a heifer, an Original that will for sure be staying in the herd! With a positive average ratio for WW (104), YW (106), IMF (106), and REA (109), her cow card is stacking up to be a great one. Bred to the up- and-coming outcross sire Summit, I really think this mating will work well on her.

• Beacon makes great purebreds but maybe even better are his halfblood daughters! 944 goes back to an Angus cow we bought from Wulf Cattle in the very beginning of our time here in Starbuck. That 11-year-old Angus cow finally went to town this year but still had the most perfect udder you have ever seen. Gracie has followed suit, maintaining a great udder and continues to stick AI. Her beautiful structure and type are proven by her 50K daughter that made it into the Fab 5 and was shown around Minnesota by the Kutney family.

HISTORY OF CLEAR SPRINGS CATTLE COMPANY

Jim and Twyla Wulf married in 1986 and had three sons, Justin, Travis and Brady. Until the fall of 2011, Jim worked with 3 of his brothers on the operation the late Leaonard Wulf began in 1949. Here they raised registered Limousin cattle, farmed row crops and had an extensive cattle feeding operation. On Memorial Day of 2011, Jim and Twyla took a holiday drive to see Mark and Mary Kay Fredrickson as they had heard they were looking to sell their ranch near Starbuck, MN. Through countless hours of prayer, Jim and Twyla were led to take a leap of faith and venture out on their own. Travis joined them when he got home from building grain bins in Missouri that summer and Brady followed a few years later after college and work experience at CR Koehl and Sons. As Jim had been the cowherd manager at Wulf Limousin for many years, it was clear that he wanted to raise cattle with exceptional maternal value in his new operation. Simmental and SimAngus came to mind, and immediately after, Mr. Tom Hook. Jim grew up showing cattle with Tom at the MN State Fair and had the utmost respect for his integrity and industry knowledge. Today, thanks to a long list of mentors, neighbors and friends, Clear Springs has built one of the premier Simmental herds in the United States.

• Wow, what an opportunity here. Homeland’s full sister that absolutely crushes her genomic predictions with an elite level of maternal and carcass quality. Her first natural calf is Inspired, and his calves are developing into one of the top sire groups here at Clear Springs. We flushed her to Essential with a ton of success, producing a $20,000 son going to Stavicks, who unfortunately injured his testicles. We kept Kobra back for ourselves and love what he is doing as far as structural integrity and CE to YW spread. Gibbs’ in Alabama bought some of the embryos and are flushing a Hanoi X Essential daughter, and her calf by Kangaroo this year is sure to be a sale highlight. 0110 is a unique breeding piece who can be bred to the biggest, most powerful bulls in the breed to create true genomic outliers and the Limitless calf she is carrying has as much potential as any! Flushed as a virgin heifer to Guardian, 4 sons went across the country to some outstanding cattlemen. I know I am letting her go before realizing Est. • In her young carrier, 096 has quickly became one of the most prolific bull makers here at Clear Springs! Her first calf, a Genetic Force sold to long time bull customer Diamond Peak. Then last year her Triple Crown son was a highlight lot going to Travis Standley in MT. Now in 2024, she raised a phenotypic rock star sired by King James that will be very popular come February. Some cows just have the IT factor, and Hebrew is obviously one of them! Her outcross pedigree, balanced EPDs, hetero black status, and superb feet, udder and structure make her a big-time candidate to improve either the black or red Simmental population. Est. • This powerful 231A daughter in poised to make high TI cattle with a tremendous look. Her Guardian bull last year sold for $10,000 to Kelly Froelich in ND. 060 is long made and flexible with an excellent disposition. Her added capacity has lent itself well to her fertility as she continues to move herself earlier in the calving season every year with a 359 day calving interval. If you are looking for bull makers, the 231A daughters sure fit the bill, they all have enough milk to raise a solid calf, and those calves usually go on to explode even further after weaning.

• Another 231A daughter that has raised an outstanding Guardian son working for Blake Huntley in MT. Guardian/ Beacon on 231A has been an excellent combination for us and many other breeders across the county and her Keynote heifer from this year is showing that Keynote will follow suit and work well on them too. 015’s granddam was one of our original cows from Steve Eichacker and lasted well into her teens maintaining sound feet and a great udder. The added performance in Hop Scotch makes her a great candidate for those breeders looking to produce performance bulls.
