Aidan’s idea first came out of his enjoyment of ice fishing, which he was fairly new to. He wanted to have a small fishing tournament, then thought they could use it as a fundraiser, then more people became involved. “I told friends, and made posters,” says Aidan. “We put it on Facebook and on an- nouncements at schools. RUSSELL l Aidan Harps is not quite eleven years old but he is already highly involved in volunteering for his community—most specifically with Brain Freeze, the ice- fishing derby he started last year to help a friend, Justin McKenna, raise money for physical rehabilitation expenses. Following up on that success this year’s derby will be held from noon to 3 p.m. on February 8, on the Castor River beside the Russell Cen- tennial Pool, followed by a social and auction at the Russell House Pub.

Besides fishing, there will be games and treats for kids, doorprizes, and larger prizes. “Even if you don’t fish, show up and do- nate,” says Aidan, suggesting participants wear very warm clothes. The Rebel Alliance and the Empire join “forces” to raise money for the Children’s Fantasy Reading Garden being built outside the Russell Township library’s Russell branch. These stormtroopers, Jedis, sandpeople and Darth Vader himself are part of the Capital City Garrison 501 st Legion, which describes itself as “bad guys doing good”. Le conseil municipal du village de Casselman est heureux d’annoncer la nomination d’ Alain Ménard à titre de chef-pompier de la municipalité. M. Ménard est pompier à Casselman depuis 1996, et le conseil est convaincu qu’il saura répondre aux besoins de sa communauté en mettant à profit ses expériences et son expertise. Depuis qu’il est pompier, M. Ménard a suivi plusieurs formations et cours du Collège des pompiers de l’Ontario, ce qui lui a valu, entre autres, le titre de capitaine de la division de la formation à Casselman en 2007. Il est aussi membre fondateur et enseignant actif du comité de formation des recrues de Prescott- Russell. M. Ménard est le conjoint d’Anne Legault et père de deux jeunes demoiselles, Sarah et Chloé. Il est aussi copropriétaire et mécanicien du Garage Ménard et Frères Inc. à Casselman. Le conseil municipal désire lui exprimer sa plus grande appréciation et lui souhaite bonne chance dans ce nouveau défi.
The municipal council of the Village of Casselman is pleased to announce the appointment of Alain Ménard as their new Fire Chief. Mr. Ménard has been a firefighter in Casselman since 1996, and the council is convinced that his experience and expertise will serve him well in his quest to meet the needs of the community. Since becoming a firefighter, Mr. Ménard has attended several training sessions and courses at the Ontario Fire College. In 2007, he was appointed as the training division captain in Casselman. He is also a founder and an active teacher of the Training Recruits Committee in Prescott-Russell. Mr. Ménard is Anne Legault’s spouse and the father of two young girls, Sarah and Chloé. He is also co-owner and mechanic at Garage Ménard et Frères Inc. in Casselman. The municipal council of the Village of Casselman wishes to express its utmost appreciation and wishes him best of luck in his new challenge.

SAINT-ISIDORE l Après un début d’année glacial pour ses collectes de sang, la Société canadienne du sang encourage vivement la population à aller donner du sang. Saint-Isidore a compris le message et prépare une clinique de sang, début février. Les conditions climatiques extrêmes qui ont sévi dans la province à la fin du mois de décembre et au début de ce mois de janvier, ont forcé la Société canadienne du sang à annuler pas moins de 24 collectes de sang, soit une perte de 1200 dons. «Le début de l’année a jeté un froid sur nos activités de collecte, indique Mark Donni- son, vice-président aux relations avec les donneurs. Malgré cela, nous avons réussi à faire face à la demande et à répondre aux besoins des patients en produits sanguins en puisant dans nos réserves nationales.
