Sukhothai This designer hotel definitely grabs the attention of visitors. The interior resembles something from a magazine, with its dark grey and pea-green walls, wooden floors and impressive beds. The minibar is free, while you will freshen up at the sooth- ing subterranean spa centre with a de- tox massage. Located in a new luxu- ry complex near West Nanjing Road Station, there are plenty of design- er clothing stores in the surround- ing area, if that’s your style. RESTAURANTS Yi Long Court This two-Michelin-starred res- taurant, with a kitchen led by exec- utive chef Wai Fai Tsui, is situated within The Peninsula Hotel. With impressive views of the Bund and uniformed waiters, this is the ideal place to celebrate special occasions. Standout dishes include stir-fried steak with lily bulbs and asparagus, as well as shrimp dumplings served in their own steam. Taian Table The Michelin three-star Taian Ta- ble is run by German chef Stefan Still- er and has a legendary eight-course tasting menu that changes every six weeks. This eatery represents a great example of Shanghai's culinary di- versity – Stiller specialises in Euro- pean-Asian fusion cuisine, with pop- ular dishes including garam masala with yoghurt gelato and scallops with Japanese mustard. This miniscule res- taurant is housed in a nondescript of- fice building in the Changning dis-
top terrace, lobby bar and even the underwater Mr Fisher Restaurant. SHOPPING Alongside Nanjing Road West Station (covering the stretching ex- tending south along Shimen First Road and ending at Weihai Road) is a new complex that includes a col- lection of designer stores and inde- pendent boutiques, all stylised with tastefully measured architectural solutions. There are brand stores like Champion and Coach, but al- so the Starbucks Reserve Roastery – the world’s largest Starbucks es- tablishment. INSPIRATION Shanghai’s modern art scene is dominated by two contemporary gal- leries located by the river. The Yuz Museum, a project of entrepreneur Budi Teck, is housed in a building that was designed by renowned Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto (it previous- ly formed part of Longhua Airport, which had an important role in the film Empire of the Sun). The Pow- er Station of Art, as the name sug- gests, is a former power plant on the Huangpu River. The Nanshi Power Plant powered lighting around the city from 1897, only to become sur- plus to requirements following the construction of new power stations. It resembles a Christmas tree in the evenings, with red lights illuminat- ing its chimney.

trict and is easy to miss. It has only a few tables, but we recommend sitting at the counter encircling the small open kitchen. BARS Punch Room If you want a scene that resem- bles something out of Blade Runner with nighttime views of Pudong and the Bund, complete with glistening lights and skyscrapers rising to the heavens, the Punch Room provides perfect panoramic windows. It also offers a great negroni cocktail, while the atmosphere is discreet yet sophis- ticated, at the top of the Shanghai EDITION hotel. Intercontinental Wonderland Hotel Providing one of the grandest (and craziest) sights in Shanghai’s new architectural explosion is the InterContinental Wonderland Ho- tel, which occupies a former quar- ry. This is the perfect place to enjoy views of this semi-subterranean hotel (part of it is underwater), while drink- ing whiskey chilled with ice shaped like rocks. The hotel also offers a roof-
