FINISHING SHOTS
BOOM BOOM BRAMBLE: On June 1, 1984, Livingstone Bramble shocked the boxing world by scoring a brutal 14th-round TKO over the super- popular Ray Mancini to lift the WBA lightweight crown in Buffalo, New York. Bramble, a prohibitive 4-to-1 underdog, fought brilliantly throughout, outboxing Mancini at length and more than matching the champion on the inside. After wobbling Mancini badly at the end of the 13th round, Bramble went through the gears in the penultimate stanza, battering the game champion all over the ring before referee Marty Denkin halted the action. Inexplicably, two judges had Bramble behind at the time of the stoppage, while the third – and only sensible – official had him comfortably ahead. Mancini was making the fifth defense of the title he won from Art Frias in May 1982.
