His Word, the Holy Bible. When exam ined at this point will you say, “ Oh, I was so busy at school. You see, I was student body president, editor of our school paper, and played guard on our basketball team. My schedule was pack ed full, not much time for Bible redd ing.” Sounds pretty feeble before a Holy God, doesn’t it? To be “ approved unto God” you must give ear to His tutoring. Some of the greatest of His lectures are found in Romans and John: “ But God commend- eth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8). “ For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the. world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:17, 18). How much consideration have you given this assigned passage? When we take God at His Word ex perimentally and accept Christ as our

personal Saviour, we are immediately “ approved unto God.” Then follows the most important bit of advertisement in all the world. When you learn of a super malt shop, the whole gang is soon in formed of the thick shakes at this favor ite spot. In like manner the Lord fills us with His zeal to spread the Good News, so that each of us becomes a “workman that needeth not to be ashamed.” We are most anxious to have all our friends know this Christ, who has taken away our sins and who gives us real victory over daily temptations. As we speak of Him to others, and pray earnestly to Him during our Quiet Hour, our walk draws closer to Him and the Holy Spirit gives us wisdom to “ rightly divide the word of truth” , that is, He helps us to understand the Bible. God is giving you the assignment for today. Are you giving heed to His ex hortation, “ Study to show thyself ap proved unto God, a workman that need eth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” ?

Study?

Phooey! By Bess McClennan Antisdale “ School! Studying to be done!”

“ Studying? Are you kidding? That’s for sissies and girls. None of that stuff for me. And, besides, why study when I can get by without it?” “ Yes, but do you always get by? A few of your teachers are lax in discipline and allow you to pass a course with no

effort at work, but then there are some of your learned ‘profs’ who are not so lenient, and you ultimately suffer the consequences.” And then a brigade of excuses march in review through your mind as you meander home. “ The teacher just doesn’t like me, and besides almost everyone else flunked the course this semester,” you alibi. But somehow when the time arrives to present the graphic picture your re port card portrays, all your lame ex cuses stumble and fall to the ground be fore the examining eyes of your father. You are certain that he knows your thoughts and intentions. If this confer ence with your -dad makes you tremble, how do you suppose you will feel when some day you face your Heavenly Fa ther and the report card of your earthly activities is laid before Him for His examination? In the Book of Books our assignment reads: “ Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Tim. 2:15). Since God is our Heavenly Father, He is both kind and understanding, but He is also just. When He makes a request of you, He expects you to act upon it, the same as your earthly father means business when he tells you to cut the grass. As the greatest Teacher instructs you to study, He is exhorting you to read, and reread O C T O B E R , 1948
