Neighborhood Develop- ment (MEND) and its joint venture development partner Conifer Realty, LLC have been named a winner of the Supportive Housing Asso- ciation of New Jersey’s (SHA) “Supportive Housing Project Award – Large Scale Devel- opments” for their work on Springside School Apartments in Burlington Township. The 75-unit low- and moderate- income apartment community provides residences and ser- vices for both senior citizens and those requiring support- ive services for independent living. The annual SHA Awards recognize successful initia- tives and honor the leadership and dedication of outstanding individuals and organizations that increase permanent sup- portive housing opportunities for special needs populations in New Jersey. Awards will be presented at the NJ Sup- portive Housing Conference on Friday, December 5 at the Renaissance Woodbridge Ho- tel in Iselin, NJ. Springside features 32 apartments located in the former Springside Elementary School – initially built in 1871 as a one-room schoolhouse known as the Mitchell School at Springside. The remaining 43 apartments are located in a new, two-story addition attached to the rear of the former school. The apartments have been 100 percent occu- pied since April of this year. Sixteen of the apartments are occupied by individuals who require supportive services that are provided by Legacy Treatment Services (formerly the Lester A. Drenk Behav- ioral Health Center) of Haine- sport, NJ. “We’re pleased to receive this award and are especial- ly proud that Springside is providing affordable perma- nent residences to Burling- ton Township seniors,” says Charles Lewis , senior vice president, Conifer Realty, LLC. “This new housing, as well as similar projects that Conifer and MEND are work- ing on, puts us on the cutting edge of a nation-wide effort to house special needs popula- tions in community settings where shelter and services go hand-in-hand.” n
