Dear Friends and Colleagues:

As we ease into 2014’s holiday season, it is also a season of celebration for USGBC NJ’s Emerald Award winners who have demonstrated exemplary best practices in sustainability and green building. This year our 12th Annual Emerald Award Gala is taking place on Friday, November 7th at Montclair State University Hall, a LEED Certified location. This event promises to be an especially celebratory Gala, taking place on a Friday night enhanced by a nationally renowned band: the Infernos. This event also enjoys the reputation of being one of the best networking events in NJ. I am truly inspired by the projects we are honoring. These award recipients are an example of the best in sustainability and green design that New Jersey has to offer. They span a wide range of topics and boast some impressive achievements:

• In the first phase of creating its new campus in Clark, L’Oréal USA Research & Innovation converted dated offices in a 50-year-old former distribution center into modern, sustainable, LEED Gold laboratories. • In 2013, the activities of the NJ Clean Cities Coalition directly resulted in the reduction of more than 4.2 million gallons of petroleum and a resultant GHG reduction of over 21,000 tons. • Paterson Habitat for Humanity’s Harrison Green provides five LEED Platinum Homes that families earn- ing 80% or below Area Median Income can afford, while lowering monthly maintenance and energy costs through the utilization of innovative green building technologies. • MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper is a state of the art healthcare facility located on three acres of remediated, previously contaminated brownfield in Camden. It is designed to deliver a world-class health- care experience and improve the overall quality of life for patients and the surrounding community. • The Kent Place School Upper School Academic Center is a new 45,000-square-foot LEED Gold addition that embraces the school’s traditional aesthetic and rich history and traditions, while serving as a forward-looking, integrated learning tool for the students who inhabit it on a daily basis. • The Bayer HealthCare U.S. Headquarters is part of one of the largest-scale, mixed-use redevelopment sites in northern New Jersey. The team developed a 675,000-square-foot, LEED Gold-certified facility for this global industry leader and long-time New Jersey corporate citizen.
