Lady Lorraine loves to sing
performance in honour of the renowned jazz singer next May, at Concordia University’s Oscar PetersonHall. In a sense, her evening entertaining listeners in the cozy intimacy of Le Chenail, as well as every other venue on her performance schedule this season, will serve as a warmup to her memorial concert honouring the life and spirit of her mother, through Lady Lorraine’s own unique style of Township Music. “When I was a little girl, I used to say ‘I want to sing likemy mumwhen I grow up.’” Klaasen added. “I could see how my mum made people happy with her singing. It’s a wonderful therapeutic gift.” Lady Lorraine uses a cooking metaphor to describe her style of Township Music. “I call it (township music) a mixed ma- sala,” she explained. “It’s a variety of South African styles.”
Klaasen takes words and phrases from Zulu, !Xhosa, and other South African lan- guages, and weaves them together into amu- sical tapestrymerged withmerrymelodies. “Each person does it (township style) their own way,” she said, noting that the end result is both unique and still familiar. “South African rhythms are very distinctive.” As she continues to perform, both on stage and in the recording studio, Lorraine Klaasen can take comfort knowing she has honoured her mother and herself, both in spirit and in song, earning international acclaim for her work, including a 2013 Juno Award for Best Worldbeat Album, and ano- ther album now listed as a Juno nominee for next year. “Canada’s been such a wonderful plat- form for me,” she admitted. “To be honoured and acknowledged, for that, I am thankful.”
