Woodlands Hospital Bereavement Centre Birmingham completed project - Birmingham Women’s Hospital

Type | New Build Value | £4.2m Duration | 48 weeks Architect | PHD Architects QS | Vital Services

This is an exceptionally crucial new building for the Women’s Hospital. The new facility is unprecedented in the UK, being the first bespoke building specifically designed for bereaved parents following the loss of their baby. Constructed on the last remaining land available at the Women’s Hospital, situated in a small area behind the main hospital, the project faced tight access and limited storage, necessitating ‘just in time’ deliveries and careful logistics planning. Secured through an open tender process, we collaborated with the NHS team to reduce the initial tender that exceeded the budget. Our Value Engineering efforts included changing external walls to SFS construction, reducing steelwork, and redesigning foundations. The traditional construction features a green roof, a long connecting corridor to the ICU, and high levels of security. The aesthetically pleasing building comprises individual family rooms, soft finishes, a courtyard, and external works.
