Passion & Desire Part 2

Y ou may recall in last month’s Curbside I discussed my take on the article Patrick Knight submitted titled “Take a Kid to a Garage” and the burning question it posed, “How do I get into this game?” Immediately my lifelong involvement in street rodding and the path I chose came to mind, resulting in a photo of the 30-foot lineup of tools I use while playing this game. Upon further thought I realized it wasn’t so much about the tools gathered, but more about the time and skills it has taken to learn how to use them produc- tively. The assorted supplies and tooling to keep them all operating is a significant investment as well. It wasn’t until reading the printed version of that column several weeks later when it hit me like a ton of bricks, you don’t have to make rodding the focus of your life to get into the game. Sometimes I forget most people just want to enjoy all the pride and excitement of owning and driving a great old car, and they are much less interested in restoring a rusted hulk or fabricating parts for a vehicle. Many times someone’s vision of a great old car comes from memories of years past, sometimes as simple as a car they saw or usually one they drove in their earlier years. Now, a month later I thought it important to point out there are many ways to play the game of rodding without devoting your life to building an entire car. With plenty of options available, many rodders simply set aside a budget, buy their dream, and instantly begin enjoying the rodding experi- ence. The first car deemed a ‘hot rod’ for me wasn’t a cream puff, but I did have $200! Those same opportunities exist today, but instead of a ’37 Chevy coupe a rodder on a budget today might be look- ing for a donor from the ‘70s or ‘80s and possibly a four-door sedan. The old timers reading this will remember when ’37/38 Fords were recognized as ‘ugly ducklings’ but became revered in later years for their streamline appearance under the rodders’ touch. Whether at NSRA 29 Below gatherings or in shops and on streets across America, there are fine examples of our grandparents’ low-mileage four- door sedans being converted into cool cruisers. Available at reasonable prices, with nothing more than the correct wheel and tire combination and a slammed stance these huge lumbering sedans instantly take on an entirely new attitude. Or, fol- lowing the footsteps of the ‘37/38 Ford, unusual and unpopular cars of their time are suddenly cool

all these years later. Rat Rods and pickups have opened the door for many younger enthusiasts, and we all found out a little patina won’t ruin your rodding fun. Between the low-buck approach and the over-the-top effort lie most enthusiasts’ involve- ment in the rodding lifestyle and the parts manufac- turers that supply this marketplace have created a smorgasbord of bolt-on products, making the need for specialized tools less. I obviously wasn’t looking at the entire picture when writing last month’s editorial and with the lightning speed of event coverage today, I also just realized there are still many members who are not ‘connected’ to today’s communication stream. For our unconnected friends we present the 2026 win- ners of the “America’s Most Beautiful Roadster” and “Ridler” awards, two of the most prestigious indoor car show awards presented each year.

Storage Costs A common complaint in the collector car hobby involves a car owner who grows frustrated with a restoration shop that takes years and years to com- plete a restoration. Here’s an example of the com- plete opposite—an owner who wouldn’t pick up his car! This is a lesson in why you don’t want to delay picking up your car from a repair shop, treat- ing the shop as storage space. I recently read an article about a real-world situa- tion and thought it would be of interest to you members since our hobby involves so many shop/owner transactions. I changed the names to protect those involved and legal comments are general in nature, but the end result is something you don’t want to get involved in. Ed wanted to get his ’70 Mustang restored and took it to a local body shop owned by Bob for some repairs and a new paint job. Seven months later Bob told Ed the Mustang was done but when Ed arrived, he was

unhappy with the paintwork and Bob agreed to repaint the car. One month later Bob texted Ed to tell him the car was done and ready to be picked up but there was no response. Another month went by and Ed said he could pick it up on Saturday but then never showed up because he was at the hospital with his mother. Finally, another month later, Bob contacted Ed and asked, “Now what do I have to do to get you to get this car?” Ed responded he would be traveling for the next three-to-four months and couldn’t pick the car up until he returned. Ed did send a friend, a used car dealer who rented storage to Ed for his other collector cars, to the body shop to inspect the Mustang and the friend claimed it still needed some more paintwork. Although Ed had already paid the full bill, the shop had the right to charge for storage when the car was not picked up promptly, but Bob chose not to charge him because “he was a regular customer, and I just wanted the car off my lot.”

Exasperated, Bob decided to start the process to have the Mustang declared abandoned under the Virginia Abandoned Vehicle Act. That involved sub- mission of an online application to the DMV, which sent a final notice to ED at his last known address, advising him he had 15 days to get the car. Otherwise, it would be sold to a third party or sent to a demolisher. When Ed did not respond, Bob sold the Mustang to one of his mechanics for $2,000. The mechanic then went to the DMV and got a title issued in his name. When Ed finally returned to pick up his car and was informed it had been sold, he sued Bob claiming the abandoned- vehicle sale was improper because the work had never been finished on the car and he never received notice of the sale. The jury agreed with Ed and awarded him $78,500 plus interest. Bob appealed the decision. The Court of Appeals of Virginia didn’t have much trouble with the lack-of- notice claim. Once the DMV received the aban- doned-vehicle application it searched its records and found nothing for Ed. He acknowledged the Michigan address was what he called his “first address” at his parents and he never updated it. That was on him and with no other information to go by, Virginia DMV properly sent the notice to the Michigan address. Under statute, if the DMV fol-

lows the requirements of the statute, which it did, its notice “shall be sufficient regardless of whether it was ever received.” The tougher issue was whether the Mustang was an abandoned vehicle. Clearly, Ed never intended to leave the car there forever. But even though the Abandoned Vehicle Act appears to be aimed at dilapidated vehicles that are left behind on someone else’s property, it isn’t limited to those situations. If a vehicle has remained for more than 48 hours on pri- vate property without the consent of the property’s owner, it becomes an abandoned vehicle. The Court of Appeals decided Ed’s Mustang met this definition and reversed the trial court’s judgement. In the end Bob owed nothing and the mechanic got to keep the Mustang. Ed lost his $78,500 Mustang plus attorney fees at trial and on appeal, which likely exceeded the value of the car. Ed Miller Southeast Division Director Spring Hill, Florida Ed, The best time to get a problem worked out is before it blows up and the legal process starts. Once things get into the court system, all bets are off. An early deal is usually the best deal.—ED

NSRA Autocross 2026 Your First Day at the Track

By Kevin Webb NSRA Autocross Director autocross@nsra-usa.com

W ith the 2026 NSRA Autocross season rapidly approaching, it’s important we review a few basic steps to make sure you have a great racing experience. Vehicle Prep: Even though you may have already cruised your vehicle for years on streets and highways, a few extra steps will avoid any surprises at the autocross track. Tire Pressure: Changing tire pressure at the track is an easy way to change the handling, how- ever always set a base pressure so you know where you started. A tire pressure gauge and pump are great tools to quickly make an adjust- ment, then return to your original setting for the trip home. Fluids: Making sure all the fluids are at the proper levels can help you see if anything changes after a few runs. This is a good time to do an extra check on the brake fluid; any discoloration should be addressed with a fluid change. Lug Nut Torque: A check of the lug nuts is always a good idea before track day; you might find you missed something after an upgrade in this area. Check trim rings and center caps for proper attachment, they can come loose under hard turns. Junk in the Trunk: Before you go to the track, take everything out of the trunk and check the spare. Make sure the jack and tools are properly secured, a jack or handle sliding across the trunk can make a nasty dent in the quarter panel. This is a good time to consider a small tote to hold other items, it makes it easier to unload at the track (if you had the fire extinguisher in the trunk, it’s the perfect time to move it to the interior). Small Cooler: It gets hot at the track, and a cooler with waters or your favorite beverage is a good idea for those “cool down” periods. No alco- hol please. Attire: Great weather always has a risk of sun- burn, and having some sunscreen available is for your protection. A hat helps, and some of the new sun protection shirts really work. Tools: If you are using a trailer, then you proba- bly have that set of tools ready to go. If you are driving to the event, a small set of basic tools

helps. Also, some zip ties in different sizes can secure that one thing you find a little loose. Grab a single wire coat hanger, this can be used to hold an exhaust system in place if a clamp or rubber support breaks. Infrared Thermometer: These are handy, inex- pensive tools that can help gauge brake perform- ance after a few runs. You may find the brake tem- perature a lot higher than you expect, especially if you find the brakes seem to fade. This can also help diagnose any engine cooling issues. Shoe Polish: You’ll sometimes see drivers mark a spot on the edge of the tire with white shoe pol- ish. This can help them see how far the tire is rolling on turns and can help set tire pressure for better handling. Lawn Chair: My #1 goal with the NSRA Autocross program is to get you out of your lawn chair, but having one for your “cool down” time is a great idea. Pop-up Tent: If you can fit one in the vehicle or trailer, they can be a great asset at the track. It gives you some shade, and it also provides a nice parking spot when you are not racing. Don’t for- get to bring either weights to hold it down, or zip ties to secure it to the fence. Helmets: All autocross events now require hel- mets on the track; this is not an option. Helmets must carry a valid Snell (SA2015, SA2020, SA2025), FIA, or SFI rating, with Snell 2010 hel- mets expiring on December 31, 2026. A helmet is required for all passengers as well. Interior: Anything that can move will when you are out traversing the course, so floor mats should be removed. This is a perfect time to con- sider mounting the fire extinguisher behind the driver’s seat. We look forward to seeing you at our NSRA Autocross events, and although in time, you’ll learn most of these simple preparation tips; by fol- lowing them you’ll soon be wheeling around the NSRA Autocross courses with ease and both you and your car will be safer out there on the street. If have any questions, comments, or suggestions please e-mail me at autocross@nsra-usa.com. See you at the track!

The opinions expressed herein do not necessarily reflect those of the National Street Rod Association and/or StreetScene Magazine. The Cars of Trans-Am Racing — 1966-1972 By David Tom

T he legendary history of the pony car wars comes to life in this softcover edition of The “Cars of Trans-Am Racing.” The SCCA Trans-Am Racing Series launched in 1966 and was designed to showcase a new class of sporty domestic cars racing on road courses. Each major automotive manufacturer participated heavily in the Trans-Am Series, and in a few short years, it became the ultimate American auto- mobile showdown. When the modified muscle cars of the series were seen per- forming well on the coun- try’s finest tracks, fans wanted a model of their own in the driveway. These “pony cars” boasted a new look and style not seen before, and their all-around per- formance eclipsed anything accomplished by production- based American GT cars up to that point. This softcover edition of The Cars of Trans-Am Racing is unique in that it focuses on the cars used in this legendary series. These vintage Mustangs, Camaros, Challengers, Barracudas, Firebirds, Cougars, and Javelins all are extremely popular with collectors and enthusiasts today. Seeing them in their “full-com- petition” versions when they were new will bring back many fond memories for those who were fans of this series. In addi- tion, enthusiasts who enjoy these cars today look to the

Trans-Am Series cars for styling inspiration and performance hints as part of the growing Pro Touring trend. Many of these historic cars have been restored to race- ready condition. Additional insight and interviews from the original builders and the teams that maintained the cars pro- vide an insider’s viewpoint never before seen in print. The 8 1/2-inch x 11-inch, 192-page softbound book features 485 color photos. T he right mild custom is a special thing, still obvi- ously the old car it started as, but so much cooler! One of my co-workers thought this one would make a good feature and while I was waiting to talk to Jack Herbert about his ’49 Chevrolet Styleline a specta- tor/rodder commented he loved the seats and in response, Jack said the car was built for long distance cruising and he should take a seat for himself. Jack is out of Midlothian, Virginia, and has loved customs since he was a kid, wanting a nice traditional custom that evoked the moonshiners of the past. Jack has had a few rods, and for this custom he decided to work with

Page Customs to get his ’49 looking

The crossmembers and frame shape have been extensively engineered (using FEA computer simulations) to provide optimal stiffening, particularly at the body mounts which makes for great chassis dynamics. Jack had a 376ci LS power- plant slipped between the rails running a Holley Sniper EFI on an oversized single-plane intake, a fac- tory style air cleaner, gargantuan cast iron headers, and hidden coil packs with a faux distributor deliver- ing the spark. A Tremec 6-speed manual then delivers the power out to 18/20-inch Detroit Steel wheels wearing modern Diamondback white walls. Sitting slammed on steelies is by far the biggest mod on the otherwise flawlessly restored Styleline. The APRIL 2026 33

just right and ready to cruise across the Mississippi. Jack and Page Customs found a great starting point, even once it was blown apart, but to build a great driver that dragged rocker, they agreed to switching out the chassis for a fresh GT Sport Classic perimeter frame from Art Morrison. The Sport GT front suspension runs tubular control arms, Wilwood Pro Spindles, adjustable Strange Engineering coilovers, an adjustable anti-roll bar, and Baer brakes. The rear suspension is a Ford 9-inch on a tri-angulat- ed four-bar, Strange coilovers, an antiroll bar, and Baer brakes actuated by a Wilwood master cylinder.
