Talking to Dad

Scripture:
Matthew 6:9-13
T here have been many times when my car was giving me trouble that I longed to pick up the phone and call dad. My dad learned cars the old-fashioned way. Being broke growing up he had to tear everything apart and rebuild it if he wanted to drive something. He had a sharp mechanical mind and could read a Chilton’s manual and tear an engine apart and put it back together. His buddies would call him up and say “Richard I have a problem. See if you can figure this one out,” and he would see it as a puzzle and go to work on it. Sadly, dad passed away a little over two years ago, but even toward the end, he might not remember where he left his keys, but he knew what size socket was needed to take off a Holley carb. I miss being able to call and talk to dad, but one thing is for sure, I can always talk to my heavenly father. God is the one that created communication. He designed us not to live in this world alone, but to have a rela- tionship with him as well as those around us. One of the things I have come to learn is that since God created this world and designed love, joy, laughter, and wisdom, when I have a problem the best place to start is with a prayer seeking His wisdom. As I read the Bible, I saw that the men and women of the Bible in their prayers weren’t speaking fancy words or
highfalutin prayers, no, they were sharing the struggles in their lives and talking with God from their heart. I also realized that the great leaders of the Bible were getting answers from God as well. I have never heard the audible voice of God like Moses did or many other men and women of the Bible, but I do trust, according to God‘s word that he hears and answers our prayers. I know the hard part for me is to slow down long enough to listen, but when I do, it’s amazing how much better my decisions are and how my relationships are because I am turning them all over to God. If you’re new to the prayer thing, a great way to start is pray- ing the model prayer to the Lord each morning in sincerity out loud. If you’re just doing it as a routine, you’re missing the whole point. Jesus gave us this model prayer to teach us more about how to talk to God. In the next issue I’ll share how I’ve learned to use this prayer as a model and how it has changed my prayer life forever. Until then enjoy Matthew 6:9-13: 9 “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heav- en. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.
