portale post The Season of Rejuvenation

June 2019

S ummer is the season for looking your best! It’s the season for rejuvenation and feeling good, and we’re here to help you get the most out of the warmest months. Conventional wisdom says you go to the dentist to maintain a beautiful, healthy smile. But what if I told you that you could achieve a beautiful, youthful glow to your whole face? It’s possible, and it’s all thanks to advances in cosmetic dentistry. More dentists, including myself, offer Botox treatments. It may seem odd, but it’s true, and it makes a lot of sense. Dentists are well-versed in the anatomy of the head and neck, not just teeth and gums. We know facial muscles and how each part works with the others. We spend so much time working in very small spaces with delicate tools designed to create beautiful smiles. Bring that all together and Botox makes perfect sense. It’s another tool in the dentist’s toolkit. I added Botox to my own toolkit because it’s a great way to make a beautiful smile stand out that much more. Another way to think about it is that we want to make the picture frame look as beautiful as the picture inside! Botox helps smooth out the lines and wrinkles on your face to help you achieve a healthy, youthful look that complements your smile. It’s a simple injection into spots around the muscles of the brow. This helps smooth out frown lines and crow’s feet. The wonderful thing about Botox is that it’s not just cosmetic. Botox has other applications as well, including the treatment of chronic pain and discomfort. Botox has become a treatment option for debilitating migraines and issues related to the temporomandibular joint, or TMJ. Just as Botox helps smooth facial lines and wrinkles, it can ease tension in facial muscles that lead to headaches and neck pain. It’s also been used to treat TMJ-related pain. And because Botox is a targeted treatment, it’s often more reliable at treating these conditions than over-the-counter options.

worry about incisions, stitches, or any kind of surgery. It’s no more complicated than a regular appointment to see the dentist!

After your treatment, most people start to see (or feel) results within 24–48 hours. One Botox treatment can last up to four months.

If you have any questions about Botox, don’t hesitate to ask. If you’re curious about achieving a renewed youthful look that matches your smile, we may be able to help. Or if you want to know more about treating migraines or other types of facial pain, we may be able to get the relief you’ve been looking for. Just give us a call and we can set up an appointment to determine if Botox is right for you.

Together, we can make this one summer to remember!

– Dr. Portale

Even better, Botox is just an injection. Whether you want to smooth out lines or ease the symptoms of a TMJ disorder, you don’t have to

Restore Your Smile and Your Confidence Don’t Let a Missing Tooth Get You Down

What Options Are Available to You?

When you have lost a tooth or have a decayed or damaged tooth that needs to be removed, you may wonder what happens next. What are your

Brighten Your Teeth

options? What should you do if you’re missing a tooth?

Perfectly white teeth framed by a great smile have been a highly sought-after feature for centuries, starting 4,000 years ago with the Egyptians. However, over the years, the teeth whitening process has advanced beyond using a paste of ground pumice and wine vinegar. We now have a number of products at our disposal to get whiter teeth faster and more effectively. Here are a fewways you can whiten your teeth today. In-Office Bleaching Giving your dentist the job of whitening your teeth will produce the best results, though it might take a little longer and can be a little more expensive than an at-home bleaching kit. The bleaching sessions themselves don’t last long — usually about an hour — but require multiple visits for the desired shade of white. Also, it’s important to consider that if at-home kits are used incorrectly, they can lead to bleached or even burned gums, which is why many people prefer having their dentists perform the procedure for them. Gels and Whitening Strips These options are applied directly to the teeth, either with a tray or a thin strip. They offer a slightly less expensive method than in-office bleaching, costing anywhere from $10–$55, but they take much longer. Depending on the peroxide used in the products, they will need to be applied to teeth twice a day for several days or weeks until the desired result is achieved. Toothpastes and Rinses Both of these options are meant to remove stains through regular use, but whitening products contain chemicals that will help remove stains as well as brighten them at least one shade. However, these products aren’t made to bleach the teeth and will make a minimal difference in whitening. No matter which method you choose to use, you should speak to your dentist first if you’re planning to whiten your teeth. They can help you decide the best and healthiest route to take.

One of the best options is to replace the tooth. Living with a missing or damaged tooth can lead to serious health issues. It can be painful and lead to

further infection, but over time, a missing tooth can also alter your bite and harm your jaw, which can lead to additional complications.

On top of the health risk, it can influence your self-confidence. All too often, people with a missing or damaged tooth are reluctant to smile or speak naturally. They hesitate and don’t let their true self shine through. Certain replacement options, including bridges and dentures, can fill in the gap, but they fall short for many people. They often don’t look or feel the same as your healthy, natural teeth. These options can lead to other issues, such as damage to your existing healthy teeth, which may be used to support the bridge or dentures. These devices can cause bone loss and the deterioration of the bone structure in your face. With dental implants, by contrast, you can have one or more of your teeth replaced in a manner that is durable, beautiful, and mimics your natural tooth structure. Because dental implants replace individual teeth, you don’t need to worry about many of the issues associated with bridges and dentures. Plus, each implant is custom- made to exact specifications. Once in place, no one will know it’s an implant but you! If you are considering your options for a missing or damaged tooth, be sure to ask us about how we can help. We’re here to help you put aside the worry, so you can smile and engage with others with utmost confidence, knowing your smile is complete.

It’s normal to feel the jitters before you head to the dentist. This nervousness is nearly universal, especially for new patients. But if there’s one feeling we don’t want you to ever worry about before making your way into our office, it’s shame. All too often, patients put off going to the dentist because they feel guilty about the condition of their teeth. That’s why those long-winded lectures from down high are largely a thing of the past in the dental field and have been replaced by cooperation and compassion. And if you think your teeth are somehow the worst the dentist will have ever seen, think again. Dentists see hundreds of patients, each with their own struggles and concerns, and many of their conditions are more
