SENSITIVE EYE TRIGGERS
Reading labels is important! Many companies use ingredients to help push the shelf-life of their formulas to 2-3 years however, this may lead to an increased amount of sensitivity. Below are a few of the ones used most frequently. Benzalkonium Chloride (BAK) is a preservative used in eye makeup, mascara, makeup removers and even some eye drops. Studies have shown how this ingredient is a toxin to the epithelial cells in the corneum and may accelerate dry eyes. Formaldehyde is another ingredient to be aware of! While we may think cosmetic companies aren’t formulating with this anymore, it shows up a lot! This ingredient is known to trigger contact dermatitis and some individuals are highly allergic to it. Look for it in shampoo and even mascara. Parabens are most familiar to us today. Sadly, these preservatives are found in many cosmetic and beauty products. Certain parabens have been linked as endocrine disruptors that lead to hormonal imbalances and possible cancers. Parabens have also demonstrated similar effects to BAK when found in products used around the eyes. Fragrances can create eye watering. Today it is hard to tell the difference between synthetic perfumes and natural essence but beware that many of these stronger fragrances can cause sensitivity and overall irritation.

Sensitive eyes can be caused by a variety of issues and result in the eyes and tissue around the eye becoming itchy, watery and red. As you are probably aware of, the eye tissue is very thin and delicate.
