6. Visiting during an outbreak of COVID-19 or influenza COVID-19 is an illness that can affect a person’s lungs and airways. It’s caused by a virus called coronavirus. Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. Residents of nursing homes are a particularly vulnerable group who may be a risk of serious illness if they develop COVID-19 or flu.
