John Watermolen
Get to know Orange County staff... The Personnel File:
GIS Manager
John Watermolen is one of our newest employees. He has come to Orange County all the way from Nebraska to fill the role of GIS Manager! He jokes that he ’ s been making an “ eastward migration ” in his adult life, which has now led him to Virginia. With him, he brings decades of experience using maps and data to help tell real - world stories that improve decision making. Despite having studied
Juanesta Williams
Support Technician cartography in school, John is quick to point out that GIS is “ more than just mapping. It allows us to connect any physical feature on the landscape with attribute information. ” The result is visual data connected to a place that is more useful and actionable than just spreadsheets. “ Seeing the data [that way] really helps the lightbulb go on, ” John said. Assisting wildland firefighters with GIS tools is one of his favorite accomplishments from his prior positions. He enjoyed being able to help the responders better allocate resources and stay safe while combatting the fires. John is also proud of his non - profit work with Heifer International. Applying his GIS skills in that role “ gave him some perspective ” on the world and allowed him to help small - scale farmers acquire important tools like water pumps. When asked where he would travel if he could do so without limitations, John ’ s love of cartography shone through, and he answered in one word, “ everywhere. ” He says he ’ d like to visit each of the continents, including Antarctica, just for the experience of seeing it. We ’ re glad to have you, John!
