FIBRE CONNECTIVITY THERE’S NO WIRELESS WITHOUT FIBRE

Since we entered a new digitalised era, technologies are evolving quicker and quicker, taking advantage of existing fibre connectivity capabilities and demanding new ones every day. One million or more new Internet of Things (IoT) devices will be sold each hour by 2021, according to a research by Gartner, and the scale of IoT adoption is set to grow at an unprecedented rate. Smart devices are becoming increasingly present throughout homes and offices, with consumers and enterprises alike demanding faster, more reliable connectivity. Giovana Labegalini, business development manager at HUBER+SUHNER looks at the role of fibre in supporting wireless networks.

W ireless networks will play a crucial role supporting the adoption and evolution of these new devices and applications. However, wireless shared networks may offer limitations on the available bandwidth if there are many devices connected to it, or if there are many neighbouring Wi-Fi’s competing over the same frequency bands. This will result in the network becoming congested, compromising the user experience. Consequently, a dedicated link is the safest way to ensure a high- speed internet connection, especially for the applications that require always- on and reliable connectivity. ROBUST CONNECTIVITY FTTx access combined with the new capabilities of the wireless network will enhance end-users’ connected experience

The vast bandwidth capabilities of fibre optics has opened new doors for operators, service providers and developers, who are eager to capitalise on the service delivery and revenue opportunities only fibre can offer. Fibre to the Home (FTTH) is the shining star of the Next Generation Access network and provides an excellent platform for high and ultra-high-speed access technologies. REQUIREMENTS OF THE WIRELESS REVOLUTION Over the last ten years, the evolution of our connected world has been remarkable, with the number of things that can be connected growing exponentially. These devices connect mostly via wireless Access Points (APs), but behind these access points, a dedicated link into the home is anyway required, to accommodate bandwidth- hungry applications such as home entertainment systems, media streaming and low-latency online gaming. Providing connectivity to devices and

and enable ubiquitous connectivity to be delivered to all corners of residential and commercial premises at incredible data transfer speeds. For customers, this will enable efficient business and make access to information more democratic, which is viewed as important to both governments and private entities. As a result, governmental funding or incentives for FTTx deployments can be found driving the market on many levels around the world - from countries to small villages. There is no question when it comes to fibre being the ideal technology for connecting WAN and access networks, as it offers high data rates across distant locations, while providing a lower carbon footprint. It is also the safest investment when considering current and future applications. With this in mind, HUBER+SUHNER has developed solutions that allow robust fixed network connectivity and serve the technology-savvy consumers of today.
