BREAK THOU THE BREAD OF LIFE Words by Mary A. Lathbury Music by W. F. Sherwin

Mary Ann Lathbury was bom August 10, 1841, in Manchester, New York. Her father was a Methodist minister, and two of her brothers en tered the Methodist ministry. She possessed versatile gifts, having un usual ability as an artist, and also becoming a successful poet and writer. She contributed verse and drawings to several religious periodi cals, and wrote regularly (illustrat ing her articles with original draw ings) for St. Nicholas, the children’s magazine. When the Chautauqua movement was originated and held its first en campment on the shores of Lake Chautauqua (New York) in 1873, Mary Lathbury was the private sec retary of the founder, Dr. John H. Vincent (later Bishop Vincent). During the Chautauqua encamp ment of 1877, Dr. Vincent asked Miss Lathbury to write words for a song which could be used by the “ Chau tauqua Literary and Scientific Circle” as a “ study song,” to be sung at every session. She complied, a n d quickly produced “ Break Thou The Bread of Life.” A musical setting was provided by William Fiske Sherwin, musical di rector of the Chautauqua assemblies. He was bom in Buckland, Massachu setts, March 14, 1826, devoted his life to sacred music, and became a noted choral director. He studied under Lowell Mason and was a teacher in the New England Con servatory of Music in Boston. Dr. Vincent said of Mary Lath bury: “ She lived in the spiritual world, was in constant communion with heaven, knew the deepest, sweet est feelings of a spirit that had looked into the very face of the invisible God!” She passed away October 20, 1913, in East Orange, New Jersey.
