church at almost any time of the day and find s e v e r a l communicants there.” Dr. Beck speculated that this unusual church attendance might be a form of defiance toward the regime. He found that the official propaganda from the Government was virulently anti-religious, but it appeared to have little effect upon the people. Dr. Beck, who was collecting ma terial on German expellees from the East and the relationship between na tional ethnic groups within East European nations, also found strong evidence that the United States was still highly regarded in Czechoslo vakia. Bavarian City Accused of Religious Bias The Evangelical Press Association of Bavaria sharply criticized the city council of Guenzburg for retracting the appointment of a prominent Munich physician as medical direc tor of the local hospital because, the Association said, “ He is a Protestant.” Dr. Konrad Dietrich was selected as the most qualified of fifty-nine appli cants for the post, but the council later rescinded the nomination. It said that “ certain local conditions which have to be taken into account,” would not permit a decision in his favor. The council subsequently ap pointed a Roman Catholic to the medical post. The Protestant press group called the council’s action in re gard to Dr. Dietrich an obvious viola tion of the West German constitu tion which forbids any discrimination on the ground of religion. It charged that the council had acted under “ pressure” from regional Catholic quarters. Strontium 90 Gauged Strontium-90 can be measured more accurately now by means of a new chemical extraction method described by chemists of the Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, Illinois, attend ing the 138th national meeting of the American Chemical Society, Science Service reported recently. Strontium- 90, produced in nuclear explosions, is one of the most dangerous elements in fallout. It is known to cause leu kemia and bone-cancer and is often referred to as the “ bone-seeker” be cause, like calcium, it tends to seek the bone in man and in animals. The new process developed at Argonne makes it possible to separate Stron tium and calcium, thereby improving the accuracy in assaying Strontium- 90 content in soil and elsewhere. It may contribute to precise measure ment of world-wide Strontium distri bution.
