King's Business - 1960-11

After the chairs were dusted Berta and Buddy placed them in a semi circle in the corner nearest the door where the air was freshest. They found a large wooden box and turned it up on one end. “ A desk for Moth er’s Bible,” said Berta, “ and for our bouquet.” She placed the wild-flowers she had gathered on the way to the church in a milk bottle. “May we ring the bell now, Moth er?” Buddy was halfway to the rope- dangling from the belfry. “Yes, I think it’s time to ring the bell.” And Mother watched as Berta and Buddy pulled and tugged at the heavy rope. Soon the tones of the bell went echoing all down the valley. “ It is ringing again!” said Mother softly to herself. People began to come into the church: a father and his little girl, a woman, a couple, a whole family, some more women, a group of boys and girls. After the singing Mother opened her Bible and read these words which were spoken by an old prophet named Jeremiah many hundreds of years ago: “ Ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls” (Jeremiah 6:16). “ Jeremiah said those words,” Mother went on to explain. “ To some people who had loved and served God at one time, but now they had forgotten Him.” Then she asked, “ Do you know how those people an swered Jeremiah?” Everyone was listening as Mother closed her Bible and laid it down. Would you like to know? Here are their very words: “We will not walk therein.” Then Mother told them about her visitor from the state of Maine. Berta and Buddy had been asleep the night he called at their home, and so they sat and listened eagerly to what Mother had to tell them. Her visitor had told of churches he had seen as he drove across the country: churches with doors locked; churches whose bells did not ring on Sunday morn ings; churches which had that sign tacked to their doors — CHURCH CLOSED. Mother told how sadly her visitor had spoken when he said, “ Those people must have loved God when they built those churches, but now they have forgotten the old paths, where is the good way.” The room was very still when Mother finished telling about her visitor. She paused for a moment, and (continued on next page)
