New Doc. New Digs. With a smile that lights up the room and a passion for family medicine that’s as contagious as her enthusiasm,

When Dr. Walker was at medical school at Michigan State University, she was a part of the rural medicine track which gave her the ability to work in Midland for a few years then spend the rest of her time in the Thumb at Scheurer Health. “I actually got to spend a lot of time with a lot of the different doctors out here, especially the family medicine doctors. I loved the culture, the people and how welcoming the community was to me throughout that time. When it came to start thinking about where I wanted to end up for my practice, I decided I would love to come back here to where it all started.” Dr. Walker’s first day at Scheurer Health is etched in her memory. "I started with Dr. Paul Scadden at Scheurer Primary Care - Sebewaing, and I remember him telling me, 'You know a lot more than you think. You can do this.' I spent my whole day with him and it was great. I left that day feeling a bit overwhelmed, but it was also amazing to see how much his patients cared about him and how much he cared for his patients and the relationship they had built within that rural practice,” Dr. Walker recalls, “I thought, yep, I like this place, I am going to be okay for my next two years while I’m out here.” "Medical school and residency often felt like drinking from a fire hydrant," she jokes. it becomes abundantly clear that Shelby Walker, MD is here to make a difference. Dr. Walker is our latest physician to join our Primary Care ranks and is joining Scott Reiter, DO and Paul Penfold, PA at the newly renovated and expanded Scheurer Primary Care – Caseville, starting in August of 2024. Dr. Walker's journey to medicine began early when she made a bold declaration to her family at just the age of three: she was going to be a doctor. "I had terrible eczema, and I was sick of dealing with it at home and nothing seemed to be working. And I decided I was going to find a solution and be a doctor, and it just stuck," she laughed. Her journey from that spirited decla- ration to joining Scheurer Health is a tale of dedication and passion. After completing her undergraduate studies at Central Michigan University and her medical degree at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, Dr. Walker pursued her residency in family medicine in Midland. "I chose family medicine partly because I just liked little pieces of almost everything," she explained. "I loved pediatrics but hated the goodbyes at age 18. I really wanted it where I could see the entire family from birth throughout their lives and build lasting relationships."
