Where possible the participants shall work in teams of two: one exercise per participant.
Note
It is recommended that a live ‘injured person’ is used for this exercise.
Note
If possible, medical advice according to site emergency response plan should be sought before securing an IP to a transfer board.
Note
An injured person must always be attached to an approved attachment point.

ELEMENT 5.1 - PACKAGING THE INJURED PERSON
Learning objective:
38) The participants can perform a rescue by packaging an injured person on a rescue stretcher and transfer board in a vertical or horizontal configuration to enable safe transportation. This is be achieved by doing regular checks, using rescue equipment such as cervical collar, and avoiding head down configuration of the unconscious injured person (Skills, intermediate level)
Whenever possible, an injured person should be lowered in a horizontal configuration
Note
The instructor shall:
Explain that a pre-use inspection of rescue equipment may be omitted only if it is permitted by the manufacturer’s user manual and the manufacturer’s criteria, or the participants’ own organisation
Demonstrate a pre-use inspection of the transfer board(s) and rescue stretcher(s) required / chosen to instruct in this module, by following the principles and covering:
a.
markings and labels
b. operating weight and temperature range, if applicable
c. equipment is within the period of formal inspections
d. checking integrity and the absence of damage, corrosion, saltwater / chemical / lubricant / dirt exposure or contamination
e. checking for the absence of significant wear of the equipment
