much as it contracts in another, so that, the center of motion is always the same and you have the same number of beats on a day in January and a day in June. There was a like problem in religion: to find a motive . . . to move men to unselfish service for God and man. The problem is solved by the gospel. That motive is found in the believer’s response to the infinite love of Christ.—Adapted from Twenty-five Hundred Best Mod ern Illustrations, by Hallock.
For Those Who Have Topics I. NO, FOR GOD IS LOVE (1 John 4:7, 8). Does God ever fail? Can God ever fail? No, and “God is love.” Recall the characteristics of God, and you w ill find that they are the elements of love: gentleness, thoughtfulness, helpfulness, guilelessness, patience, and consideration. God is holy, pure, just, merciful, and good. Thus you see that love in the fullest sense of its meaning, never fails. II. NO, FOR LOVE ELIMINATES SELF (1 Cor. 13:4-6). Can I love a friend and envy his abilities or his possessions? Can I love others and at the same time contin ually seek to hold the place of im portance among them? Am I loving others when I am proud of myself? Am I loving others when I do things that humiliate them or embarrass them? Whom am I loving when I think in terms of “me” and "mine” ? Does a person who loves others get his feelings hurt easily? Can I even listen to gossip about some one I love, let alone pass on gossip about him? Honest consideration of these ques tions w ill bring a new realization off the unlimited scope love covers in the life of every true Christian. Love for others means crucifixion of self. III. NO, FOR LOVE IS THE SOURCE OF SERVICE (1 John 4:9-12, 21). It was God’s love that led Him to send Christ to die for us. That is the greatest manifestation of love that can be made (John 15:13). And, “ if God So loved us, we ought also to love one another.” Notice some of the t h i n g s Paul mentions in Romans 12 about Chris tians being energized by love: They are “kindly affectioned” to one an other, they prefer one another, dis tribute to the “ necessity of saints,” are “ given to hospitality,” bless their persecutors, “ rejoice with them that do rejoice, and ¿weep with them that weep.” Christians, filled with God’s love, are impartial, honest, and they “ live, peaceably with all men.” In stead of retaliating, they do good to their enemies. A simple fact regarding love is that it cannot stay its hand from do ing good. Thus, love produces peace and harmony among those who exer cise it. Love, God’s love, is the an swer to every problem of mankind, both individual and collective.
