to the Son includes “every one that hath heard from the Father, and hath learned” (v. 45). Any one can prove that He belongs to that elect and blessed company that the Father hath-given Jesus by just coming to Him. If any one does thus come he will be thus received. There is nothing in the doctrine of election as taught in the Bible to shut the most fearful soul away from Jesus, but there is everything in it to comfort and assure those who have come. Jesus says in the most positive way, of any one who does come, “I will in no wise cast him out.” If any one thinks him self too great a sinner to come to Jesus, or thinks that He does not belong to the elect and therefore cannot come, or imag ines that he has sinned away the day of grace, or committed the unpardonable sin, just let him come and he has the Word of the, Lord Jesus Himself for it that He will receive him. It is a wonderful reason that Jesus gives for not casting him out. “for I came down from heaven, not to do mine (1 ) The Want of Life, v*. 24-27. What is God’s law concerning bread for man? own will, but the will of Him that sent me” (v. 38), Then follows a statement of the Father’s gracious will in verse 39. It is very different from the idea that many have of God’s will. God’s will is “of that which He hath given me, I should lose NOTHING, but should raise it up at the last day.” Not one then that really comes to Jesus and thus proves he belongs to “that which the Father hath given” Jesus, can ever be lost (cf. John 10:28, 29; 17:12, R. V);-Col. 3:3, 4; 1 Peter 1:3; Jude 1; 2 Tim, 1:12). It is furthermore the will of God that ‘‘every one’’ (1) “that beholdeth the Son” (R. V.) and (2) “believeth on Him” should have eternal life.” Such is the Father’s will, and Jesus adds, “I will raise him up at the last day” (v. 39). So any one who has beheld the Son and believed on Him may be" sure of two things | first, that he has eternal life ; sec ond, that'Jesus will raise him up at the last day. Is salvation.by works?
