along the lines: “maybe the feared outcome feels so real because it is real. It is a reality from your trauma that has not been fully lived out yet, that has colonized your future. One cannot know what the future will bring, but one thing you can know with certainty is what has happened in your past. So, your absolute certainty of what will happen may be a marker of origin, of where this thing you fear in your future really comes from.” This intervention, given here in general terms, would be individualized according to specific details. (Fernando points out that this living of the past reality in the future, which he calls ‘temporal shifting’, has been described by Winnicott (1974) in similar terms in his paper on “Fear of Breakdown”). Overall, the analyst’s task is to aid in the work of construction of the original traumatic experience from the zero process bits and pieces that exist in the patient’s present and future. The analyst is not uncovering a hidden representational world shown to have manifested through transferences and relationships, but rather constructing a missing piece of the patient’s life by locating and bringing to light the zero process bits and pieces left from the shattering experience of the person’s traumas. These live in a separate split off world and need to be collected from that world, and put together to form a never yet fully formed experience, so that the two worlds, and the patient, can finally be one again.
VII. FURTHER AND CONTEMPORARY DEVELOPMENTS IN LATIN AMERICA
VII. A. International Authors, Influential in Latin America: Besides Klein and Bion (above), it is mainly the work of Andre Green and Piera Aulagnier- Castoriadis that have exerted notable influence on diverse Latin American conceptualizations of representation. Below are some of their most influential ideas pertaining to representation. VII. Aa. Andre Green Green (1996) offers an extensive development of the concept of representation , emphasizing the following points. He proposes a three-level framework: 1. The Conscious (Cs) – Conscious representation includes both the thing representation and the word representation that corresponds to it. 2. The Unconscious (Ucs) – Unconscious representation consists exclusively of thing representations accompanied by a quantum of affect . The preconscious is the part of the unconscious that can become conscious and, strictly speaking, belongs to the Cs system, often referred to as Cs-Pcs .
