Operations training

Slinger Signaller Standard / V4 2023-05-02

ELEMENT 3.17 - HAND/RADIO SIGNALS

Learning objective: 53) The participants can take responsibility for directing (on their own) the crane in different scenarios using hand or radio signals (Ability, intermediate level)

The instructor shall: Facilitate a discussion on the hazards and risks from failing to use hand or radio signals correctly Recap the signals package/equipment list (Annex 3) Explain that the person giving the signals must face the crane driver to ensure that the meaning of the signal given is clear to the crane driver Demonstrate the practical application of the signal package, one signal at the time. Alternative activity: have one participant at a time demonstrate one signal and another participant explain the meaning Demonstrate how to accurately direct the crane using all relevant hand and radio signals available Facilitate a group discussion on the risks of the crane being navigated using more than one slinger signaller Provide constructive feedback on the participants’ ability to direct the crane using all relevant hand signals and on the participants’ initiative and individual taking responsibility for the slinging operation The participants shall: Engage in group discussion on using more than one slinger signaller Practise the ability to accurately direct the crane using all relevant hand signals available in different lifting scenarios, that combined will use all the different hand signals Receive feedback on slinging constructively Each participant must correctly demonstrate usage of hand/radio guided signals in three different lifting scenarios, e.g. open lift, restricted lift, blind lift, radio-guided lift
