Under Coach Jimmy Kowalski, the 13U ANCC All-Star Team has established itself as a strong perennial contender in the Mid-Atlantic golf region. After battling it out in a tough Sectional Championship at Montgomery (MD) Country Club, the team earned a historic third straight trip to the PGA JR Regional Championship held in early September at the Maple Dale Country Club in Dover, Delaware. The two-day Regional tournament featured the top eight teams from the Mid-Atlantic region, Delaware, and New Jersey. At stake: A trip to the PGA JR National Championship in Frisco, Texas. After losing five veteran players from last year’s team, this year’s All-Star team was a mix of veterans and rookies: Charlie Wisniewski, Ryan Totte, Nate Miller, Conner Vaughn, Robbie Connor, Cate Mallon, Jake Collins, Colin Puffer, Dillon Parekh, Brooks Coffee, and Christopher Szymanski. Mason Dinh and Mitchell “The Big Bopper” Moore also contributed to the team in early season matches. Eight junior golfers participated in a two-person scramble format to kick off the event. The Day One pairings had Charlie and Cate first off the tees for ANCC, followed by Ryan and Colin, and Nate and Jake. Robbie and Connor were the final ANCC pair to tee off. The team finished the day with a 3-under par team total, —missing the fourth and final qualifying spot for the Match Play semi finals by only 4 shots. Despite falling short, the All-Stars rallied on Day Two as they competed in the Regional Shootout Championship against the remaining three teams. Coach Kowalski found some magic when he shuffled the pairings because the team finished with a collective team score of -11 and swept the top three spots. Nate and Connor shot a -5 to win the shootout; runners-up Charlie and Ryan were one shot behind at a -4; followed by Cate and Robbie who finished at -2. Coach Kowalski praised the team for its efforts at Regionals: “We had a lot of rookies playing in their first Regional Championship and we competed admirably. As these kids add length and experience we should be strong contenders for the Regional Championship next year. The future is bright!” The All-Star Team’s accomplishments were recognized at the Junior Golf Awards ceremony held September 29th, where trophies were also awarded for the PGA JR Spring Regular Season, the Junior Tour Championship, and the Parent-Child Scramble. The back-to-back-to-back PGA JR Regional appearances are a testament to the extraordinary job Coach Kowalski and all the golf professionals have done in developing the young golf talent here at ANCC through the PGA JR program, golf clinics, and individual lessons. With a strong foundation and the continued support of members, ANCC junior golf is not only on the map but shows the promise and potential to remain a powerhouse for years to come.
