f.v
ladder connections
f.vi hv busbar connections
Present examples of fasteners in good and bad conditions, discuss common damages and faults, the risks of using faulty fasteners, and ways to check and ensure their quality
Explain the function of and types of washers
Explain and demonstrate the basic principles of bolt elongation (necking), yield strength and tensile strength, and possible consequences of exceeding these
Illustrate examples of a bolt where the yield strength has been exceeded
Explain the importance of bolt thread and nut face lubrication
Explain the importance of the same temperature for all set components
Define and explain torque and tension
Explain the principles of angular tightening
Show the importance of correct tightening (e.g. collapsing towers, electrical fires)
Facilitate group discussions on:
a. bolts, threads, lubricants, strengths of materials, and vibration and temperature influences (including elongation, yield strength and tensile strength), and the potential consequences of not following procedures
b.
force and torque
c.
residual bolt load
Present practical examples of potential consequences of under tightening and over tightening (torque and tension) and from using the incorrect tooling
Assign a bolted connection task to be solved with unpowered hand tools in pairs
Give constructive feedback on the participant groups’ discussions about bolted connections and practical exercises
The participants shall:
Engage in a group discussion and share understandings about bolts, threads, lubricants, strengths of materials, and vibration and temperature influences (including bolt elongation, yield strength and tensile strength), and the potential consequences of not following procedures
