In pairs or small groups investigate manufacturers' documentations on sockets and securing systems

Practice selecting and using handheld tools (including vibrating tools)

When asked by the instructor explain characteristics of different types of socket securing systems

Discuss the hierarchy of tooling and potential hazards from using tools lower in the hierarchy

In pairs, find the pressure settings for different air powered tools from the relevant manufacturer’s document

Discuss potential risks and hazards from using powered handheld tools

Take part in an exercise to choose tooling for different task assignments following the hierarchy of tooling and provide arguments for their individual choices

Practice selecting and using manual tightening tools

ELEMENT 5.4 - CORRECTLY SETTING AND USING A TORQUE WRENCH

Learning objectives:

58) The participants can take initiative to perform pre- and post-use inspections on a handheld tool checking for tool integrity, potential damage, calibration test certificates, mandated inspections and in-date marking (Ability, intermediate level)

59) The participants can recognise signs of tools failure or malfunction and describe appropriate actions (Knowledge, basic level)

60) The participants can take responsibility not to use damaged tools and to place damaged tools out of service and under quarantine according to company procedures (Ability, intermediate level)

61) The participants can apply a torque wrench correctly (Skills, intermediate level)

62) The participants can recognise the importance and performance of a pre-use check on tools (Knowledge, basic level)

All learning objectives must be carried out according to manufacturer guidelines and company- specific procedures

Note

Handheld tool integrity must be included in the following exercises using different tools, such as a manual torque wrench, corded electrical tool, or battery operated tool
