Clarify the concept of a “drop zone”

Clarify that tools, equipment, accessories, minor components, items, and parts shall be transported in approved bag or container, and stored away from potential falls such as open hatches, edges and platform openings (proper housekeeping)

Present further dropped object preventive actions where relevant, e.g. toolbox talks, “take-five”, job- safe-analysis, DROPS-sweeps and DROPS-surveys (proper housekeeping)

Encourage the participants to share experiences from work situations, where haste or other constraints did or could have led to poor work safety

Ask questions and facilitate a discussion about awareness of tethering and safe work in demanding situations, such as emergency procedures and drills, where tools and equipment may be hastily handled or misplaced

Support a conclusion from the discussion on the individual's responsibility regarding awareness of tethering and safe work in demanding situations

Assess and ensure that all participants carry out buddy checks each time PPE is worn and that all carried items are tethered

Provide feedback to the participants on their awareness and abilities to tether hand tools and other relevant objects when working at height and their initiative to carry out their buddy checks

The instructor must support and ensure that the participants apply principles for preventing dropped objects throughout the practical training, including buddy checks regarding tethering

Note

The participants shall:

Take part in the discussions and share their understanding on how to reduce the risks of dropped objects and keep this awareness during the rest of the training exercises

Discuss in pairs or small groups and share experiences about identifying loose items that could potentially become a dropped object and share knowledge and experiences of dropped object
