FATHERHOOD REFLECTIONS From Humbling Experiences to Incredible Moments
I often wonder what person I would be without my kids, and honestly, I don’t want to know! As we celebrate National Teenager Day on March 21 and Absolutely Incredible Kid Day on March 16, I find myself reflecting on the incredible impact fatherhood has had on my life. Having children has been the most humbling experience I’ve ever had. Over time, I’ve learned my children are not just separate individuals; they are a reflection of me. When my children came into this world, they knew nothing. Everything they have learned, they have learned from me. As they get older, I often find myself asking, “Where did you learn that?” only to realize that the answer is, “From you!” It’s a hard pill to swallow at times, realizing that some of the behaviors I see in my children are a direct result of my own actions. I can’t just ask them to be better; I have to be better, too . Without a doubt, fatherhood has made me more of a planner, constantly thinking ahead and ensuring things are done in an orderly fashion. With kids involved in various activities, it’s important to be on time and prepared for whatever comes our way. Despite the challenges, I consider myself blessed to have my children.
One particular moment stands out to me as a significant eye-opener. I came across a video where the speaker asked viewers to close their eyes and think about the characteristics of the person they would want their daughter to choose as a partner. Then, I had to open my eyes and ask myself the question: Do I embody those same values? It was a moment of realization for me — how could I ask something for my daughters that I didn’t embody myself? Parenting and challenges aside, I genuinely love spending all my time with my family. While I do recognize the importance of taking time for myself, my family is always my priority. I cherish every moment I spend with them, even if it means spending money at the mall or attending their various activities! I’m sure every parent knows what I mean when I say that each of my children has given me their own
unique “wow” moment. From my eldest son, who is 20 years old and studying at Howard University, my 19-year-old daughter, who is a sophomore at Duke University, to my ninth-grader in high school, they all bring joy and fulfillment to my life in their own ways. One particular incident that stands out is when I broke my wrist and ankle on May 19, 2022. I remember my wife was going to participate in her first bikini competition, and I made it a point to get out of the hospital ASAP! Of course, I had underestimated my condition, and, wheelchair-bound, I couldn’t make it to the event. Despite my eldest daughter not being a very affectionate person, she stayed behind to care for me while my family attended the competition. It was a gesture that cheered me up and reminded me of the importance of family. Fatherhood has been a journey of reflection and growth for me. It has taught me the importance of being a role model for my children and the value of cherishing every moment spent with them. I’m grateful for the blessings of fatherhood and the opportunity to watch my children grow and thrive. –Duane Hamilton

Unlocking the Secrets
of Natural Rest Tune In to Your Body’s Clock
When we lie down and settle into sleep, our brain starts descending from the conscious realm into the soothing arms of slumber. As you drift off, your brain activity decelerates, your body temperature dips, and muscles relax. This phase, known as light sleep, makes up about half of our total sleep time. As the night progresses, we enter the deep sleep stage. Here, our body’s muscle tone and heartbeat find their calmest rhythm while the brain’s activity shifts to delta waves. It’s like a restorative elixir flowing through you, bolstering your immune system and mending the day’s wear and tear. Deep sleep is pivotal in cementing memories and contributes to creativity and insightful thinking. Then, we enter the famous REM sleep, when our brain activity
escalates. It is the stage responsible for our most vivid dreams and a fountain of learning and creativity. To enter REM sleep, we must be asleep for at least 90 minutes to cycle through light to deep sleep. Once we are in it, REM can last for about 90 minutes. If we wake up naturally from the light sleep stage, we feel refreshed and rejuvenated. A clock alarm, though, doesn’t know which sleep stage we are in, so it may wake us when we are in the deep sleep stage. Being abruptly awoken in this state leaves us disoriented and groggy. It creates sleep inertia, an uncomfortable stage that can put us in a bad mood when we first wake up. Our bodies are not designed to wake up during deep sleep. Cortisol, our natural energy hormone, is like a
slow-release pill crafted by nature. Levels decrease as we get ready to go to bed and rise when it is time to wake up. If the alarm disrupts the natural sleep cycle, waking us before the cortisol surge, we feel out of sorts. Our brains and bodies are designed to balance our well-being. When we respect its natural rhythms, we enhance our mood, boost our cognitive abilities, and nurture our overall health. Each night is a new opportunity to reconnect with your body’s innate wisdom and wake up to a more vibrant and harmonious life. So tonight, when you lay your head on the pillow, listen to the whisper of your internal clock and embrace your natural sleep patterns. Sweet dreams and sweeter morning awakenings are ahead if you do.
Bridging Generations
traditions. Through stories and activities, grandparents can impart valuable life lessons and cultural knowledge, enriching their grandchildren’s lives with a deeper understanding of their roots. When we connect to our roots, we develop a stronger sense of identity and appreciation for our family’s journey through time. GRANDCHILDREN HELP US STAY YOUNG. For grandparents, this relationship is equally enriching. Engaging with your grandchildren keeps you mentally and physically active, which clearly has positive effects on your health and well-being. Also, playing a vital role in your grandchildren’s upbringing can provide a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment during the golden years. Grandparenting also offers an opportunity for intergenerational learning. In today’s digital age, grandchildren can teach their grandparents about new technologies and trends and create a mutual exchange of knowledge and skills. This exchange enhances understanding and respect across generations, bridging the gap between the old and the new. The joy of grandparenting lies in its ability to enrich the lives of both grandparents and grandchildren. It’s a unique bond that nurtures love, wisdom, and continuity, weaving the past, present, and future into a tapestry of family legacy.

Embrace Your Sleep Cycle The Joy of Grandparenting: Bonding With the Next Generation In Need of Some Spring Break Staycation Ideas? Delightful Banana Bread Shattering Myths About Growing Food From Food Waste

Separating Fact From Myth CAN YOU GROW FOOD FROM KITCHEN SCRAPS?
Viral videos on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram have spread the wrong-headed notion that you can grow food from kitchen scraps. The idea is to prevent vegetable and fruit leftovers from ending up in landfills. Instead, if you save the scraps, you can grow viable plants for renewable produce, which reduces waste and your carbon footprint. However, most of these videos exaggerate the effectiveness of this process and downplay the time and cost. We suggest ignoring those videos and investing time in more reasonable ways to use organic food waste. Here are some ideas. COMPOST Composting is a popular reason to hold on to organic scraps from your kitchen. Using a composter reduces the amount of waste you contribute to landfills. This is very handy for making nitrogen-rich soil for your garden. UNIQUE HOUSE PLANTS While apple and orange seeds may take a year or more to grow, many plants sprout within weeks. Keep them in the
house as a unique house plant until they grow large enough to transplant outside. POTATOES Potatoes are an exception — they grow quickly and flourish from scraps. Get a glass of water and stick toothpicks in your hunk of potato scrap. Set the potato on top of the glass so it is partially submerged. Within a week, you’ll have roots If you want to grow herbs from food waste, your herb cutting must have a sizable stem with whole leaves. Trim the end of the stem and submerge the cut end in water. After a week, if the cutting has roots, you can plant it in a pot. So, salvaging food scraps to grow more food isn’t cost- to plant outside. FRESH HERBS effective outside of potatoes and herbs. But composting and propagating new fruit trees can potentially lead to valuable results from the remnants of your produce.
