Focus on Allied Health Nutrition & Dietetics Compliance with ward Protected Mealtimes - How are we doing at Ryde?
Protected Mealtime refers to a period of time on the ward when all non-urgent clinical activity is limited allowing staff to prepare and assist patients at mealtimes and for patients to focus on their meals. The Nutrition and Dietetics department completed the QARS mandated Ward Nutrition Audit in March and the compliance against the set protected Mealtime criteria were recorded as follows over acute and GRC:
• 97% - Ensuring patient is in a safe and comfortable position to eat.
• 50% - Offering hand hygiene to the patient prior to eating.
• 90% - Ensuring tray table is cleared of clutter and moved close to the patient.
• 50% - Ensuring that the patient has been correctly identified if feeding assistance is required via a RED / Blue mat tray aside / Blue mat deliver tray meal ordering alert in eMR. • 100% - Ensuring that the patient receives a meal tray with the correct coloured placement as appropriate.
• 28% - Ensuring assistance is offered to all patients with opening food packages.
• 100% - Ensuring that all identified patients are provided with the correct level of feeding assistance as per the placemat criteria.
• 95% - Ensuring an uninterrupted meal time with no non urgent activity.
• 100% - Ensuring all patients are allowed adequate time to consume their meal. The nutrition audit results have been disseminated to the individual wards from them to develop action plans to improve compliance as appropriate.
