Our Center for Aerospace Resilience Systems (CARS) coordinates research on cybersecurity engineering across the university, contributing to product development in collaboration with industry and federal agencies. Our engineering teams at Embry-Riddle are at the forefront of advancing aerospace, aircraft, and aviation cybersecurity. We develop innovative solutions for flight operations, unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), and satellite systems. Our researchers play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the industry by contributing to standards and policies, technology development, and best practices. We actively collaborate with leading organizations, including the ICAO Trust Framework and Cyber Security Panels, EUROCAE WG-72 ED-203A / RTCA SC- 216 DO-356A, ACI US-ACCESS, the AIA Civil Aviation Cybersecurity Subcommittee, the Cyber Safety Commercial Aviation Team, and the FAA’s REDAC SAS. Beyond our research contributions, we offer specialized short courses and certification programs in aviation cybersecurity. Embry-Riddle has also led and hosted ‘Capture The Flag’ (CTF) events, a cornerstone of cybersecurity training, at major venues like A-ISAC, ACI Cyber Rodeo, AIAA, RSA Conference, DEFCON Aerospace Village, and more. Our commitment to education and real-world application cements our position as leaders in aviation cybersecurity.
Our portfolio of aviation cybersecurity projects includes: Aircraft-based detection of GPS spoofing Trustworthiness models for aviation systems Risk management for Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) services Threat modeling and mitigation for avionics Cyber resilience analysis of components and interdependencies Rapid certification of software updates and aircraft certification support Onboard expert systems to aid pilots in emergency decision-making Cybersecurity risk management for trajectory-based operations Counter-drone technology to bring down rogue drones safely
