What is your favorite Texarkana memory? My favorite Texarkana memory is sitting in the front row at Church of the Living God Temple #4. I was always so eager to get there that, my mom tells the story, as a five-year-old I would get myself dressed and walk down the street to ensure I would be on time to catch the music, which was my favorite part Where was your favorite place to eat in Texarkana? My favorite place to eat was TLC, the burger shop downtown. I am not even sure I’ve found a burger place that tops that homemade taste yet. What was the teen hangout when you lived here? The teen hangout spot when I lived in Texarkana was Central Mall and at night the Skating Rink on New Boston Road. Interesting story; on quite a few occasions I was requested to serenade the ladies with a happy birthday song (I was the man! HAHA!) Were you a Hawk, Leopard, Razorback or Tiger? Woo Pig Sooie baby!! When I moved back to Texarkana, it was only right that I attended the school that all my family graduated from. It was actually kind of a big deal. My uncle and my older brother were two of the greatest running backs. My mother was a cheerleader captain… I mean, it was destined for me to be there. Well, I had no real choice, but I wouldn’t trade it. Hey, I did get to sing the National Anthem at one of the games. What words do you live by? Words that I live by are “You belong in the room.” It’s a mental perception that I’ve learned to live by. It reminds me not to look or think of myself as lesser, but that I am worthy of any space, room, stage or opportunity that comes my way. What is your nickname for Texarkana? My nickname for Texarkana is “TK.” Who is someone from Texarkana who impacted your life? It would have to be my mother, Debra Wyatt Nevels (Hi Mom!) She currently still lives in Texarkana. She has always represented a strength that I still carry in my heart and apply to so many other situations in my life. What makes Texarkana famous?

TXK ROOTS David Michael Wyatt Texarkana native, David Michael Wyatt, who spent years perfecting his musical talents at Berklee College of Music, is a singer, songwriter and actor whose music fits perfectly into multiple genres including gospel and R&B. Wyatt was part of BET’s Sunday Best gospel talent show, has shared the stage with well-known singers such as Kirk Franklin, been featured on Grammy Award Winner Israel Houghton’s albums and has entertained leaders such as then President-Elect Barack Obama. You can find his music on Spotify and Apple Music.

I have recently learned about quite a few notable people who were born and or raised in Texarkana. I think it’s safe to say that Texarkana might just be a breeding ground for greatness. How do you describe Texarkana to your friends?

I usually take the twin city route and talk about how cool it is to have one foot in Texas and the other in Arkansas. Or I’d share some of the childhood stories told to me (not sure how true... but they are great stories) … back in the day before I was born, the police were not allowed to cross over state lines. So, if you were one of the lucky ones to get across the line before you were caught, then you just got out of a ticket. I wouldn’t recommend trying that today!

Wyatt is currently living in Houston, Texas, with his beautiful wife Shawn and their four-year-old son Dakota.

TXK Roots is Texarkana Magazine ’s forum to highlight and honor Texarkana natives who have accomplished big things in the world. These folks may have relocated, but they took the values, education, work ethic and creativity instilled in them by growing up in this unique border city and used these qualities to blaze extraordinary trails. We asked them to share their thoughts about growing up here. No matter how far from Texarkana they may find themselves, we will always consider them our neighbors and we are proud to claim them as forever members of our extended Texarkana community. After all, “everyone is famous in their hometown!”
