CREATING AN OASIS IN THE MIDST OF POLITICAL STRIFE STEERING CLEAR OF POLITICAL ARGUMENTS AT THE THANKSGIVING DINNER TABLE

There are two things you can always expect from a Thanksgiving dinner with family: a huge meal that will leave you more stuffed than the turkey was and some sort of argument or debate with another family member about politics or the current state of the world. And with everything that’s happened this year, there’s a powder keg’s worth of political topics that will inevitably lead to some pretty explosive and potentially uncomfortable conversations. During a normal year, arguing over politics around the Thanksgiving dinner table is almost a tradition in and of itself for some families. We mentally prepare ourselves for it as we prepare to receive guests or drive over to wherever we’re planning to eat Thanksgiving dinner that year. Then, we either rip off the Band-Aid and immerse

ourselves in the argument for a while, or we spend a significant amount of energy deftly avoiding those arguments while we eat. Either way, it’s all over in a matter of hours, and we can return to our significantly less contentious daily routines and interactions. This year, however, is going to be different. Politics and world events have been up in our faces for the past nine months. The pandemic is still raging, and we’re still at least several months away from receiving a mass-produced vaccine. Everyone is worried about the election and whether or not it will work with so many people voting with absentee ballots. We’ve endured crazy storms, hurricanes, and wildfires on top of that, and we’ve seen those natural disasters politicized. We’re not entering Thanksgiving from an unpoliticized existence, and we won’t be able to retreat to one when it’s over, either. With all that in mind, we have to lean into what Thanksgiving is actually all about more than ever this year and come up with some other things to talk about with our friends and family. Thanksgiving is supposed to be a time where we enjoy the company of our family and reflect on what we’re thankful for — so why don’t we make the holiday into an oasis from all the

contentious, negative conversations that we’ve always assumed were a given and make them a little more lighthearted? If you’re not sure what to talk about besides the standard political state- of-the-world topics, or the traditional (but potentially short-lived) what- am-I-grateful-for line of questioning, let me leave you with one idea for a Thanksgiving dinner conversation topic to get you started. Nov. 18 is actually Mickey Mouse Day, which celebrates the anniversary of the Walt Disney character’s first on-screen appearance as “Steamboat Willie” in 1928. So, in the spirit of Mickey Mouse Day, why not talk about your favorite Disney movies, Disney characters, or maybe just the latest show or movie that you’ve watched on Disney+? Of course, since I love, love, love Disney movies and everything Disney (my iPhone has Mickey Mouse as the background), that’s an easy topic for me to jump on. However, I guarantee that if you give it some thought, you can find some topics to steer the conversation away from all the politics and create a day and a dinner truly worth being thankful for.

Getting your day started with coffee isn’t always enough. Sometimes, you need to give yourself an extra boost, especially when you have little energy or trouble focusing. For an awesome start to your day, here are five tips to get you going right off the bat. Wake up 5 minutes early. What’s the power of five minutes? It can be more than you think. Spend this time doing simple breathing exercises or a quick meditation so you can get focused for the rest of the day. If that’s not your style, you can prepare a quick to-do list for your day ahead. Either way, it’s always nice to have a little extra time for yourself without losing too much sleep. Start with green tea, then coffee. A cup of coffee at 7 a.m. can leave you burned out by 10 a.m. Try swapping it with green tea for a more gentle wake-up call. After that, you can brew your favorite coffee to keep you going strong. This practice also might help you consume less caffeine overall! TOP 5 HEALTHY LIFE HACKS TO HAVE AN AWESOME MORNING

Riding a motorcycle down the open road is almost synonymous with the feeling of freedom. However, that freedom doesn’t come without responsibility. Sharing the road with all manner of motor vehicles leaves motorcyclists in a vulnerable position: They’re susceptible to a number of different accident scenarios where they will more likely be injured. However, knowing some of the most common motorcycle accidents can help you avoid them. Left-Hand Turn Accidents Roughly 4 in 10 of all motorcycle accidents with automobiles happen when a car suddenly turns left at an intersection, cutting off the motorcycle rider as they’re trying to go through an intersection or trying to pass or overtake a vehicle. For motorcyclists who want to avoid this accident, look for any indication that a car is going to suddenly turn left, such as if the car is waiting to turn, if there’s a gap in traffic right before you, or the driver quickly looks both ways. Head-On Collisions Head-on collisions between motorcycles and cars have a high likelihood of leading to severe injuries for, or the death of, the motorcycle rider. When it comes to preventing these accidents, as the rider, abide by the National Safety Council’s “Four Rs”: R ead the road ahead, keep to the R ight, R educe your speed, and R ide off the road (if a car is coming at you). Lane-Switching Accidents Every vehicle on four wheels, no matter the size, has blinds spots that their mirrors don’t account for. When a motorcycle falls in this blind spot, many drivers fail to spot them when they switch lanes, which can drive motorcyclists off the road and cause them to crash. In order to avoid this as a motorcyclist, a good tip is to make sure you can see the driver’s face reflecting in his mirrors. That means they should be able to see you. If you can’t see the driver’s face, either slow down or speed up to get out of their blind spot. Don’t let the threat of an accident get in the way of your enjoyment of the open road. And if you ever find yourself in need of legal assistance after a motorcycle collision, call Danielle Obiorah and Teri Fields at 404-994-6218 for a free case evaluation. 3 COMMON TYPES OF MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS THEIR CAUSES AND HOW TO AVOID THEM

Take a quick morning walk — and have your meetings on the go. Morning meetings can make us want to fall asleep again. Don’t spend all of them sitting down if you don’t have to! Not only will morning walks help you wake up, but they can also add some extra physical activity to your day.

Write in your journal. Who says you have to journal at the end of the day when you’re tired and ready to sleep? You can journal in the morning

about what happened yesterday and the things you’re looking forward to that day. Journaling can remind you of your daily goals and motivate you to stick to your commitments. Pack your lunch (or snacks!). Staying on track with your goals starts with having the energy to do them. Plan a healthy balance of fats, vegetables, carbohydrates, and proteins. This can be as simple as assembling dips, carrots, wraps, and salads each morning.

It’s time to try these tactics to jump-start your day!

YOU DON’T WANT REPRESENTING YOUR PI CASE 2 KINDS OF LAWYERS

When you’re trying to get just compensation for your injuries in order to pay for medical bills and other expenses, not just any lawyer off the street is going to get you the compensation you deserve. So, the question becomes, “How do I find a lawyer who will fight for my best interest?” Out of the dozens of lawyers practicing personal injury law in the Atlanta area, there are two particular kinds of lawyers you want to avoid. To learn more about these two categories of dubious attorneys, read on. High Volume/Quick Settlement Schemers Getting just compensation that will cover your medical bills and time away from work is not always a quick process. It takes time. However, some lawyers will still promise you a quick settlement. While that might sound great, it’s more than likely a scam: This lawyer can get a quick

settlement because it isn’t even close to the amount to which you’re entitled. That’s because, instead of taking their time, this attorney probably takes on a high volume of clients, does the bare minimum amount of work to get a settlement, and runs off with a quick buck, leaving you to foot the rest of the bill. Ambulance Chasers Fortunately, this practice has since been made illegal by HIPPA laws, which prohibit anyone from showing up uninvited to a person’s hospital room. The term “ambulance chaser” comes from a time when attorneys would literally chase down ambulances in order to find injured people in their hospital rooms and pressure them to hire them and represent their case. While they might not do this anymore, many attorneys still look for ways to contact potential patients without their

consent. Don’t hire them — instead, hire a team of attorneys whose reputation speaks for itself. If you’re looking for a quality legal team for your PI case, you can’t go wrong with the team at Obiorah Fields. We will take the time necessary to get you the settlement you deserve and stick with you to the end. Just ask any of our previous clients! Call today or visit our website at ObiorahFields.com.

A Number of Importance

WHY VETERANS DAY AND THE NUMBER 11 GO HAND IN HAND THE 11TH HOUR OF THE 11TH DAY OF THE 11TH MONTH

Veterans Day comes every Nov. 11. It’s a national holiday that recognizes veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces and honors those both living and deceased. Historically, the day marks Armistice Day and the end of the Great War: World War I. But what is the significance of the number 11? The armistice was signed at 5:45 a.m. in France, but it took effect at 11 a.m. that same morning — which happened to be Nov. 11, 1918. The armistice originally lasted 36 days but was extended month after month. This led to the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919, when peace was officially declared. Later that year, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed that Nov. 11 would be known as Armistice Day to honor those who fought in the Great War. This lasted until 1954, when President Dwight Eisenhower signed a proclamation turning Armistice Day into Veterans Day.

more wars — specifically World War II and the Korean War — and hundreds of thousands more Americans had served. Unsurprisingly, there was some political drama surrounding the day. In 1968, Congress made Veterans Day a federal

holiday under the Uniform Holiday Bill. The idea was to increase the number of three-day weekends in the year. Veterans Day became a holiday that would fall on the fourth Monday of October, a far cry from Nov. 11.

However, in 1978, Veterans Day was restored to its original Nov. 11 date. But why?

The answer is simple. It’s a number that sticks with you. When the clock strikes 11:11, you always take notice. By that same notion, we all remember the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Because of this, we’ll never forget the end of the Great War, nor will we forget those who served.

The change was made in order to recognize all veterans who had honorably served their country. By 1954, the U.S. had fought in
