FUN DAY!

AT EAST CHEATHAM ELEMENTARY by Stephanie Gottschalk, 2nd Grade Teacher

Anytime you can talk trash with your second grade students it’s a fun day at East Cheatham Elementary. I was so excited when the Jan-Feb “ Let’s Talk Trash! ” papers were in my mailbox. I am always on a mission to find real-world activities for my students to learn. Over the next few weeks my class was poised to learn the importance of recycling, so when I realized that there were so many things we could do with this paper, I was very excited. Not only did it give us a great selection of projects to choose from, I knew that I would save on printing. Ultimately, I decided to use some of the “Language Arts and Reading projects” that could be integrated in the upcoming weeks curriculum. The second graders used the articles to determine the main idea, context clues to determine the meaning of the words for the crossword puzzle, and key facts and details using information from the provided articles. Also, they completed daily writing prompts: the importance of recycling, information they learned about recycling, and how they could recycle at home. The paper was an extremely useful tool to facilitate our projects! We started off the week reading the first article about the art piece that was made from a tire, cone, and a toilet bowl. The students discussed what they could use around the house to make their own art piece. Needless to say, their imaginations ran wild.

Then, they were challenged to create a snowman using only recycled items from around their homes. The students took on the project of creating very distinct

snowmen made of a wide range of items found around their homes: coffee, chip, and other plastic containers, newspapers, cans, bread ties, paper plates, and the list

goes on and on. It was exciting to watch all the second graders come in the school with pride holding small, tall, big, skinny, and very creative snowmen. Thank you to all the sponsors that contributed to “ Let’s Talk Trash!. ” The second graders at East Cheatham loved the projects! Teacher note: My name is Stephanie Gottschalk. I grew up in East Texas; however, Tennessee is what I call home. I have two children and an awesome Army man by my side. I love to exercise, play golf, Pinterest and hang-out with my family. Quality time is very important to me. Teaching is my passion and nothing is more gratifying than watching children learn and develop before your eyes. I love teaching at East Cheatham Elementary.
