Letter from the Director

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

LEED as is widely known was founded to define green buildings and to measure building performance. The recently evolved next generation of building performance focuses on human health. It has become to be kown as the WELL rating program. WELL is a recent addition to the certifications administered by the Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), which administers the LEED certification program and the LEED professional credentialing program. This is the world’s first building standard focused exclusively on human health and wellness, and has brought health and well-being to the forefront of the sustainable building conversation.

WELL focuses on seven categories of building performance: air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort, and mind. Another aspect that sets WELL apart is that the Standard is grounded in evidence-based medical research that demonstrates the connection between the buildings where we spend more than 90 percent of our time and health and wellness impacts on us as occupants. WELLworks in conjunction with LEED, Living Buildi Challeng , and other green building certifications. Of interest to real estate professionals, the standard can be applied to a variety of building types, including commercial tenant spaces, existing commercial buildings, hospitality, sports facilities, restaurants, and residential buildings. WELL projects in our area include the L&L Holding Company at 425 Park Avenue in NYC, and the Center for Sustainable Landscapes at the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Pittsburgh. For more information on the WELL Building Standard, visit http://www.wellcertified.com/. As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or to discuss further at (973) 290-0013, or executivedirector@usgbcnj.org.
