JANUARY 2026

As we cross the threshold into a new year, I find myself reflecting on the historic challenges we weathered together in 2025. The elimination of federal support for public media was something few anticipated. Yet, when the future of trusted, independent journalism and enriching programming faced uncertainty, our community responded with clarity and conviction. You raised your hands and your voices, and you stood steadfastly with Twin Cities PBS. For that, we are enormously grateful. Your support made it possible for TPT to keep serving Minnesota with the integrity and impact you expect. Now, as we begin 2026, the future looks brighter. We have an exciting year of new shows, new initiatives, and renewed commitments to storytelling that reflect the depth and diversity of this community. January brings several highlights to kick off the year. One of PBS’s most beloved series, “Finding Your Roots,” returns for its highly anticipated Season 12 premiere on January 6. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. continues his remarkable work illuminating family histories that surprise, inspire, and connect us in unexpected ways. This new season features a range of celebrity guests whose careers span the silver screen, sports, and media, including Lizzo, who honed her artistry as an up-and-coming rapper right here in Minnesota. Then, on January 11, Sunday nights on “Masterpiece” welcome back two fan favorites: “Miss Scarlet,” returning for its sixth season, and “All Creatures Great & Small,” beginning Season 6. Both series bring comfort, wit, mystery, and heart – the perfect winter viewing companions. On January 19, we honor the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. At 10 am, TPT will livestream the 40th anniversary of Minnesota’s annual “One Dream, One Minnesota” celebration. You can watch the livestream on TPT.org/MLKDay. That evening, we present the Minnesota premiere of “Marked Man: Martin Luther King and the FBI,” a powerful documentary exploring the forces that both shaped and challenged Dr. King’s public leadership. There is much more to discover across our schedule this month. I hope you find time for reflection, connection, and the stories that move you. Thank you for the support you provide to TPT. We could not do this work without you.

The Unexpected Rewards of Hiking With an Older Friend By Kate Ramsay-Scott

After a few emotionally draining hiking trips, where everyone else's moods and problems dominated the conversation, I craved companionship with people who shared my need for quiet contemplation out in nature. I joined a local hiking group. On the morning of the trip, a small eclectic group gathered, a colorful parade of backpacks and hiking boots. "Gloria!" someone shouted as an elegant woman in her 70s approached us with a broad grin. She was tall, with close-cropped hair, and was rocking a large pair of silver hoop earrings. With her chic sunglasses and puffer vest, Gloria looked too glamorous for someone about to hike a trail. When we arrived at the trailhead, the group set off in an excited gaggle of chatting and I stood at the back with Gloria as she made the final adjustments to her knee braces and tightened her lumbar support. Gloria wasn't a fast hiker, but she kept a steady and even pace. I was happy to wait while she got a better grip on a tree during a challenging climb or contemplated the best way to navigate a slick rock shelf. After an hour or so, Gloria turned around with a kind smile and said, "Sorry, Kate, I hope you don't mind but I don't like talking much when I'm hiking." She gestured to the green forest around us, "My husband recently passed away after being sick for a long time. Hiking out here is my time to have some moments to myself.”

"My husband recently passed away after being sick for a long time. Hiking out here is my time to have some moments to myself.”

I appreciated her candor and told her it suited me perfectly because I didn't like talking much either. We joked that we were the perfect hiking team and passed the day in an easy and companionable quiet. Since our first meeting that day, I've followed Gloria up and down mountains, survived sweltering heat waves and slogged through deep snow drifts. We've bonded over our love of dogs and often laugh about the time I had to push her trapped hips through two gigantic boulders.
