Merry MedClub Meal Packing For The Blanchet House

MedClub President, Amber

This year MedClub got on their holiday spirit on by volunteering to pack meals togeth- er in the classrooms here at Sumner College. It was so refreshing to have the team together focused on helping and giving back to our community. Thank you to those who participated! Pronounced “Blan-shay” House is a nonprofit social services organization located in downtown Portland. They provide food, clothing, and housing programs to people in need. They believe that it is their responsibility to offer assistance in whatever way they can. They are not affiliated with any religious organizations though their founders are rooted in the Catho- lic community. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner six days a week in our Founders Cafe. Their nutritious meals are compassionately served to our guests by volunteers. All are wel- come to enjoy meals at Blanchet House. No questions asked. Thanks to generous financial and food donors they were able to provide over 300,000 meals to people without access to food last year. Email studentservices@sumnercollege.edu if you are interested in joining MedClub.

WINTER 2020 - 2021 EDITION 3

Student of the Month NURSE: Just another word to describe a person Strong enough to tolerate everything and soft enough to understand everyone.

September

Rebecca started at the University of Oregon, majoring in general science and anthropology. During that time she was volunteering with the Children’s Miracle Network and had the opportunity to interact with patients and their families at the local hospital. She was impressed by the role of the nursing staff and appreciated the compassionate care they provided. Rebecca made the decision to pursue nursing. Born and raised in Wyoming, she moved with her mom to Portland during her senior year in high school. This expe- rience, along with our transition to a virtual leaning environment, has increased her adaptability and creativity—required character- istics of nursing! Rebecca has a German Shepherd named “Quinn” Rebecca has consistently demonstrated outstanding academic achievement. A kind-hearted professional who makes others feel comfortable in expressing their opinions and viewpoints. Actively seeks out additional resources and techniques to increase knowledge and retention of information.

Rebecca C, RN

who provides the companionship to refocus and regroup. Her goal is to pursue her BSN , MSN and eventually her DNP, with a focus in adolescent reproductive health. She likes the small class size and personality of Sumner—everyone knows your name! Radiates warmth and caring! I would feel at ease with her skills if she was my medical assistant. Excellent attitude, participation during discussions, and time management. Catherine works hard at being a great student. A thoughtful individual who contributes to a strong team-centered environment! Catherine G, MA October

Get to Know Members of the Team

Lois Hine Department Chair of Nursing Programs When I was young, I always wanted to be a nurse and a teacher. I was the president of the student nurses’ association in high school. It took a while to get into college as life happened, I married, raised my daughter and worked at assorted jobs. When I finally got back to school, I started out by getting my LPN training, then went on for my associate and bachelor’s degrees in nursing. I have a love of the elderly and worked most of my nursing career in geriatrics and medical surgical. I have even served as a surveyor for the Bureau of Facility Standards inspecting skilled nursing facilities. Witnessing the care and kind work of the nurses and staff in these facilities was so inspirational. I waited two weeks after graduation from my BSN to enter the master’s program and graduated as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Around the time I graduated there were no jobs available for nurse

Dr. Lois Hine PhD in Professional Technical and Adult Education, University of Idaho MSN, Family Nurse Practitioner, Clarkson College BSN, Nursing, Boise State University ASN, Nursing, Boise State University LPN, Nursing, Idaho State University

practitioners in Idaho, but there was a position at the college for an instructor. Faculty teaching in the LPN program were required to be certified as an instructor through the state so I had to take six courses at the university. I asked and was told that I could include those courses toward the doctoral program in education so that is what I did. I graduated with my PhD in Professional Technical and Adult Education with a focus on teaching and curriculum development. I have used my education in positions as instructor, program director for nursing programs, dean of students, chief nursing officer for a group of schools, and curriculum develop- ment of practical nursing, registered nursing, RN-BSN, and master’s degree nursing programs. I love working with the faculty and students. It seems my wishes as a child to be a nurse or teacher turned into both and I’m so blessed. I live with my husband of 39 years, daughter Linda, and four dachshunds. In my spare time, which I have had very little of lately, I enjoy quilting and take a block of the month class at the local quilt shop. I love playing with my dogs and spending time with my husband who is retired. I am so excited to be joining you at Sumner College as the Department Chair of Nursing.

Thank you for all you do behind the scenes, Lois!
